Ahh, Cyrus was great... I really loved playing the character... He was so Evil... so.. freakin evil.. and from a strictly third person view, he was just being friendly and helpful to everyone in town.. save... Mire.

Details, funny happy or less happy little details, but nonetheless some that make the character fun and with depth.

It's also a good idea to try to figure trends and find something else for simple variety.

Also remember to consider your activity, don't pick one of the more necessary professions without counting on the character being needed regularly. As example I made Jolene as a character that was likely to be needed often because I intended to play her the most. While I've not done so for any other character at all and look at me, fuggit all Zark and a good example is Cassandra who was absolutely awesomely fun with the "small" profession archeologist. But not needed much, for reasons.

Remember though, as for doing a char the way Ryu describes, it's not /needed/. There's a difference between dragging your character through shit for the sake of it and another for adding to person (the latter which Ryu means). Leave some to the RP itself. With Nerissa, I made a point to make her background not normal but nonetheless happy, with setbacks but no tragedies. Because that can still make a good character and I like variety.

Yes, then it took a week in the setting and tragedy, I know, but it was in the setting at least.

Thanks very much for that input! Very helpful indeed, though I may want to point out that this:

Is 90% of the reason behind making this post. I have absolutely no idea what is currently trending or blablabla, having been absent for like... Six months or so.
