RE: [10] Rules Revision [In-Game and In-Character Policies] - Ziofera - 29-03-2014 Starting that with such heavy sarcasm may not have been the most professional way to deal with this debate, but I won't say much more on the matter. You seem to be under the impression that people want characters to be retconned, no, that would be very unfair. This isn't a demand for retroactive action, nor is it a call for the removal of characters with this in their backstories. Honestly, I just don't have the drive to argue anymore, I'm clearly in the minority and clearly this cannot be reconciled. I think that the current stance of the server is wrong, most people apparently don't. The problem for me personally was not whether rape was actually typed out or not, I felt that it had no place on the server period. It's a shame it all had to happen this way I suppose. I resent the implication that I am childish, but I can't bring myself to fight anymore, maybe other people will continue the discussion...I just can't. I'll find a way to justify the removal of Mercedes, and quietly slip away. RE: [10] Rules Revision [In-Game and In-Character Policies] - SentaiPink - 29-03-2014 The rape policy should not be changed. Nor should we change how we address it in character. Mesalia is a server with high standards for a minecraft community and it's standards that we're both proud of and that we should, under no circumstances, lower. By being as amazing an RP community as we are, we've set the bar for what our players and staff is capable of high. Thus we can allow darker rp into subjects that are not comfortable with everyone. By design they are not comfortable, that's the point. Mesalia is the only place you could have a RP that may involve some form of sexual assault and actually see a respectful if not accurate fall out. That is a beautiful thing that I've found in this server, and something I will not see changed. It is abhorrent to suggest we remove, downplay or ignore this in our RP. It stands as a testament to our standards and it brings much needed attention to subjects IRL that are constantly overlooked because they make people 'uncomfortable'. We can't remove rape or sexual assault from our rules or from what the players are capable of exploring with staff permission. To do so is to marginalize the suffering of those in the community and abroad who have gone through it, and reinforce the shaming of victims. I wont be a party to that, and I'm certain Mesalia will not be either. RP and Mesalia isn't about constant warm fuzzy feelings and hugging, sometimes it's about changing, perseverance, and survival. We are a capable community. Allowing this to be a part of the setting isn't being a part to the act, it's recognizing it can happen to anyone. It's accepting that it's a thing in our lives and one that should be respected and the victims in which helped. All of which Mesalia has done in the past and I believe will continue to do. To clarify some issues:
TLDR; Rape is a thing. It is a thing in our lore. It is a thing in Mesalia. We have a perm system to keep it respectful and fair. This system isn't broken, and when the rules are followed the RP is respectful and can even help those that have been through similar situations IRL. I believe the original version of the policies regarding sex, rape, pedophilia and pregnancy are acceptable. RE: [10] Rules Revision [In-Game and In-Character Policies] - Spitfire333 - 29-03-2014 Personally, I feel that to get rid of rape would be blatant censorship. I feel that censorship has no place in literature, and that's exactly what Mesalia is. It's not a game, there's no way to win or a universal goal. It's simply a story. Censorship in literature is wrong, and I'm sure that's something we can all agree on. Yes, I'm aware Mesalia censors other touchy subject (such as pedophilia), but there's no way to fight that right now. So let's move one step at a time. RE: [10] Rules Revision [In-Game and In-Character Policies] - FireDog - 29-03-2014 On the side of: Zark, Pink, Spit, Night and whoever else says to keep it. Rape happens in Mesa. Not going to bother repeating arguments. And it HAS HAPPENED in RP PAST. To past characters BEFORE this was set up. It happens In back-stories. One of my characters, Calina, had an extreme fear of rape and it acted on how I RP. Another player's character from the past had to deal with his character being assaulted. And BOTH ENDS were able to RP it appropriately and responsibly. When rape is applied in RP, think of the 'fade to black' for regular In Character romance. |
