[Accepted] Return of Koi - 3llusive - 23-02-2014

Garres’ Pass. A hidden paradise among desolate lands. The only land trade route between the west swamps and wetlands and the northern heights. A narrow, winding mountain road in a gulley, surrounded by rocky crags, cliffs, and bitter cold. Visitors often reminisce about the crows and carrion picking off of the dead in the pass (a near constant occurrence it would seem), and how the sun would be hidden behind the sharp walls of the pass, providing shade for the snowy heights and cold recesses even during daylight hours, creating an almost perpetual night. Over all else however, visitors recall the local populace.

The pass was named after Sev Garres. An early explorer and pioneer of the Forbidden Lands, who, as the stories went, cleft the narrow path with a pickaxe and sheer determination to reach the remote north stretches of the Forbidden Lands. There were tales and stories about how his spirit still lingered along his paths, protecting travellers and merchants passing through them. An irony, as the pass that took his name was infested by ruthless mercenaries and bandits.

These, and enough reasons for seconds were enough for travellers to stay far away from Garres’ Pass. Except for the ones who didn’t know any better. To Koi, this place was freezing, there was nothing to eat, and the best he could do was melt snow to water in a pot at night to stay hydrated and warm. Other than that? To Koi it was just another road. Up the hill at the southern maw of the pass was a small village. Hadris, as it was known to the locals.. Upon asking around for directions to the Northern territories there, Koi was directed to a man named Calvos. Calvos was man of ordinary proportions. His stature was nothing to speak of, though he was muscled and lean, strong even, with many a scar on his forearms - Koi’s knowing eye identifying them as wounds from battle of some kind.

Calvos told himself as a traveller and merchant himself, and he happened to be looking for someone else to accompany him through the pass due to it’s perilous nature. Koi, ever being eager to make a new friend and to get where he was going at the same time, saw his fortune in this. Calvos’ smile was reassuring, he was a kind enough person - simple and honest seeming. Koi didn’t know any better. ‘Three days’ he said. A three day journey through the pass and they’d make it out on the other side to the northern territories, where the cold was accompanied with warmth of a hearth, prosperity and good mead.

Koi wouldn’t reach the northern territories. Instead of a hearth to warm by, he found refridgrated betrayal. The guise of hope donned by misfortune, and a dagger at his throat while he slept. On the second night into the pass, Koi had been laying wrapped in his furs.. Unable to sleep, as was common for him.. And instead, staring into the darkness provided by the overhanging cliffs and rocks just to catch a glimpse of the stars and midnight sky.

That was when he heard the crunch of snow underfoot slowly approaching him. He thought it odd, but immediately drew the conclusion that it was Calvos -- perhaps feeding the fire? He was saved by one decision, that was only half-made in consciousness.. Instead of laying where he was and seeking sleep he glanced towards the source of the noise. It was a figure approaching the camp fire... “Calvos?” He called out, his voice rasping from rest before he could wet it.

The figure drew nearer without a response, and Koi’s blood ran chill, alertness and fear gripping his mind: something was wrong. Calvos wasn’t that tall.

Koi’s immediate reaction was to lunge for the bastard sword sheathed beside his bag, stumbling to his feet and unsheathing it to turn and face the man who darted for him, steel flashing with reflection of the fire. The steel met his in a powerful strike meeting parry. Koi recoiled from his assailant with fear, gaze darting around the camp site. Calvos’ furs were empty. Had they already gotten him? “C-calvos!” his voice echoes in the pass with desperation, the shadowed figure in front of him only laughing in quiet, mocking tones. Anger boiled within Koi. He ceased his retreat, planting his feet into the snow firmly. “W-what did you do with him?!” Koi demanded with fear and anger.. But a chill of fear ran up his spine at the man’s response.

“Why don’t you azk ‘im yourzelf?”

Koi felt the cold of steel suddenly press to his neck, his breath catching in his throat as a firm hand wrapped it’s fingers in his hair, savagely pulling his head backwards, the firmness of a body against his back, with a familiar voice in his ear.

“Hello, Koi..” Calvos whispered tauntingly.. A moment only passed without Koi’s response before continued. “Drop it.”

Fear welled within him.. He didn’t have any other choice, tears beginning to form at the corner of his eye, squinted with pain at the strain on his scalp from his hair being pulled.. The sword dropping from his grasp and into the snow. He was speechless.. Petrified and betrayed, but relieved as his hair was released, the knife coming away from his neck as he was shoved down to the ground. He turned onto his side, shivvering in the cold and snow - facing Calvos just in time to see him pick up the fallen sword, turning it over in his hand. “This isn’t too bad.. The only thing you’re worth for, anyways...” He says, nodding his head in contemplation. Koi’s eye was attracted to movement, and soon other men stepped forewards, one grasping a small log of aflame wood from the fire, shedding light on the situation as Koi was surrounded by cut throats and bandits, a few of them rummaging through his belongings with enthusiasm.

“‘E ain’t got shit fe’ food!” he heard from one of them over by his bag. The one who’d attacked him, now visible in the torch light - a man in his middle years, a short trim beard of hazelnut hair spanning his face, his head shaven bald with a scar across his eye and brow.. He bore a smile on his face. “Vell it iz no wonder the boy iz zo thin zen.” he taunts, though Koi was too far gone to be embarressed, his gaze darting back to Calvos as he was approached by the man. “W-why?” He whispers.

Calvos laughed. “Look kid, that’s the way things go in life. You roll the dice, you throw your lot in with people, you lose. It’s like gambling. This time.. This time you lost.” He says, nodding. He clicks his tongue sardonically, taking a step forwards with Koi’s sword clutched in his hand. “Better luck next time.” Koi flinched, closing his eyes and awaiting the inevitable as the sword was reared back.

“Ah-hm..” The voice of the bearded man exhales with thought. “Calvoz, wait a moment if you would.” He says with a roll of his hand. Koi opened his eye slowly, peeking around with confusion. “Why?” Calvos asks with the same confusion. “I.. Zhould like to keep thiz one for awhile. It would be nize to have one to shine my boots for a time.” He says offhandedly, and Koi grew.. Even more confused.

Calvos laughed once more, glancing down at Koi for a moment after contemplating this. “I suppose you’ll be having him draw your bathwater too, fuckin’ old perv.” Dread filled Koi at the laughter around him, he struggled to get to his feet, but the stranger who spoke on his behalf reached for his hair as well, snatching him up by it and dragging him to his feet, placing his sword across his throat. “If you run I will be letting Calvoz kill you, boy.” He says in an almost up-beat tone, as if this were a game to him. “I have just zaved your life. You will do well to keep zhat in mind, no?”

A tear fell from Koi’s eye as he searched for words to reply with, and found nothing but trembling, quiet sobs to give as his muscles went limp with compliance and fear.

It was to his relief that he found over the next few days that his savior didn’t hold him in that frame of thought. He learned that the man’s name was Jean-Pierre, and that as long as he did his chores, he stayed quiet and worked hard, that the man could be friendly enough. He’d been taken into the camp of highwaymen, now finding himself sleeping on the floor, washing clothes, sharpening swords, and keeping away from anyone he could.. The other bandits taking Koi’s presence to be an amusement over anything else - mockery and abuse was all that he could expect. He contemplated escape several times over those first few days, but the camp was expansive.. It’s populace brutal, and it seemed so long as he stayed close to Jean-Pierre, he’d be safe. The other bandits for whatever reason seemed to just isolate Koi in his presence.

The longer he stayed however, the more the man seemed to confuse him. After his first week there, he asked about Koi’s carrying a sword with him during his travels -- was it simply for dusk, or did he actually have some idea how to use it? When Koi answered with the latter, his surprise and apprehension increased as Jean put a sword into his hands, asking him to prove it as best he could. And worse, he couldn’t tell what Jean was thinking when he was finished. Koi was convinced Jean was testing him somehow, but had he passed? And what would happen if he failed?

Jean soon after began a practice of allotting Koi time to practice with a sword -- alone, with a training dummy under his supervision... Escape was something Koi pondered constantly during this, but he was growing curious. What did Jean want with him? This curiousity only increased as Jean began stepping in to oppose those who’d mock Koi, to their confusion and his as Jean started sending a message: Koi wasn’t to be attacked anymore -- and though there were some who were reluctant and even angry about Jean stepping in for a slave, he seemed to have enough pull in the chaotic community that Koi was left alone.. But none even mocked or taunted him to speak to him, leaving him alone to watch others during his chores. They were bandits, sure, but Jean was the only person Koi interacted with, and even Jean wasn’t really a friend and didn’t talk to him much.. But he was the only person Koi seemed to be able to trust, or even had. The closest thing to a friend he had in an otherwise lonely existence. Eventually, Koi asked him what was his plan in all of this? What was he doing?

And Jean finally told him in plain words. There was once a leader to the bandits inhoused in Garres’ Pass. They were once a ship among a fleet of Marine Navy vessels of a mainland military... Well-versed in combat, as they engaged with pirates frequently in protecting their nation's waters... It was one night however that a rogue wave blindsided the ship in pursuit of a pirate vessel far north of known waters. It had been a foolish thing. Like a hound chasing a rabbit into thorn bushes. The wave took some of the crew overboard with it, but the ship survived... Save for the wave tearing apart the sails and smashing the rudder. Without any means of directing their course, they were quite literally dead in the water. And worse still, after the wave the navigator was nowhere to be found. Eventually, the decision was made to abandon ship, as they had little other option. They got the couple of dinghy's that were on ship, lowered them to water and packed them with food and as many people as could fit... Many had to stay behind... They wouldn't starve for months, but perhaps they would be spotted by another navy, or drift ashore eventually. The ones that left ended up finding the Forbidden Lands... At first, exuberant in belief that they had made it home, but quickly finding otherwise as settlements, lands and people unknown -- most of them not welcoming a military presence from the mainlands. It was clear to them at the time -- rescue was not coming. More still, they didn't know when they would see home again. Out of desperation, and survival, they finally fell to thievery to carve out life out of an unforgiving environment. They found Garres’ Pass, and with their skill and former military prowess, took to ambushing caravans, travellers, and anyone trying to pass through to the rich northlands. And so far, testament of Koi’s capture, there didn’t seem to be any shortage of gold and goods to be stolen and traded with the small surrounding villages - and in return, the villages said nothing of the bandit’s presence to higher authorities. A win-win situation, as both grew rich and well taken care of.

The leader however, was a former admiral, deserted with the company of men and who’d died of illness a week before Koi’s capture. The dynamics of power in the deserters were now up in the air -- and Koi would be an ally to him, and in return, he’d have a place of influence in the new ruling. Koi didn’t realize it then, but Jean needed someone like him. Someone from the outside who he could manipulate - Koi’s isolation and reliance on Jean for protection giving him leverage. The only problem Jean still had was that Koi was no use to him as a slave. Koi would have to be seen with a measure of respect, even if no one liked him. This at least, Jean told him.. And could help him with. Koi was uncertain about everything.. But he trusted Jean after the weeks he’d spent there. He was okay at least, and he kept him from harm. So Jean began Koi’s transformation from cowering slave to respectable warrior over the next few months.

Or well, at least as far as appearances went. ‘Ztand up with your back ztraight!’ ‘No, no, no nonono! Look at me. Keep your eye vith me, who are you talking to, ze ground?’ Jean tried his best to make Koi at least act like one of them. How to walk with confidence, to keep eye contact with others, to not show fear to anyone.. Even going so far as to give him a make-over of sorts. The way he told Koi, appearances mattered. ‘You must act like you belong, and you muzt feel like you belong. If you believe it, zhey will too.’

By the time he was done, Koi could hardly recognize himself. The tips of his hair dyed a fiery strawberry, tattoos that he’d cried all the way through getting around his left arm, his clothes ripped, rugged and dark.. Koi was at least impressed with himself, even if no one else was. Through all of this though, few bought it. They could still remember the fearful and cowering Koi that had initially stepped into camp -- he was still a joke to them, a simple change of appearance and attitude doing nothing to change memory.. Every night when he came back to sleep on the floor in Jean’s hut, he’d ask the same question. ‘Do zhey believe you yet?’

Not even Koi did... But soon, that changed. ‘Koi, and remember. If anyone you are tenze vith zteps to you? You hit zhem as hard az you can in ze face.’

Radical advice. It was his luck that when he finally had to use it, it was one of the younger members of the group that was still trying to make a name for himself.. Picking on Koi seemed like an easy way to fit in, judging by the way the others talked about him behind his back. Koi was grinding a sword carefully when the man, Gavin approached him. “Hey, Koi is it?” He asked, Koi’s gaze flicking up at him warily before descending back to his chore. “Well see.. Me and the boys were wondering Koi, since you seem to like polishing swords so much, if you’ll come back tonight? Your boyfriend doesn’t have t-” Koi had been sitting there quietly, heart beating out of his chest as Gavin got closer, continuing to walk as he talked. His left hand came up from the sword blade where it’d been pressing the edge against the waterstone, striking out across his jaw even as he stood.

From the surprise of it, Gavin dropped like a rock, a chorus of surprise coming from his friends a few feet away. “Ohhh! Shit!”

Koi stepped away from the chair he’d been sitting on -- shit the sword was still in his hand. Gavin crawled away from him a pace, blood on his lip as he scrambled to get back up. “Hey what the fuck?!” Koi’s eye was wide with awkward, gaze flicking around for a moment, mouth slightly open as he formulates a response. “Get the fuck out of here before I polish this sword with your face.”

...Not the best threat that’s ever been made, but sword in hand, it was convincing enough, Gavin retreating to his throng of friends. “Hey fuck you! How about that? How about I come back with a sword and string you up?”

Again, Koi had to take a moment for response. Well... Gavin didn’t exactly have a sword /now/... And he did. So, Koi stomped forwards in pursuit, sword in hand and Gavin was abandoned by his friends who were previously standing by his side as Koi made his way as if to attack. They all scattered.

‘Do zhey believe you yet?’ Jean asked later that night, to which Koi beamed. “Probably!”

Slowly, Koi started fitting in a little more. At least enough that people would start talking to him occasionally.. Though he didn’t fully accomplish his goal until Jean took him out with the others to ambush a caravan. The two things Jean told him were thus: ‘Look like you’re doing zomething, and whatever you do, do not throw up.’ Considering how many people were killed in the ambush, that was more or less ‘Acting, difficulty setting: Insane’. He mostly stood off to one side with sword in hand, tip buried in the dirt and looking away for... Archers, when asked. Only one person questioned him about it, and thankfully decided Koi was just fucking weird as opposed to almost getting sick. The time sheltered away from the sunlight in the pass gave his skin a naturally pale disposition, so that he was considering emptying the contents of his stomach and his skin felt like the inside of an oyster wasn’t apparent.

All in all, Koi was finally not-so-depressed about his situation finally. He was doing well, all things considered... Up until the night that Jean-Pierre died. An attack on some travellers didn’t go as planned -- one of them had shot him with a crossbow, and one thing that the deserters were short on was medical professionals. He died of sepsis only a few days later, and Koi was feeling alone and afraid as ever before, realizing that he was truly in the wolves den, sleeping there at night, as well as up shit’s creek without a paddle and any other suitable metaphor, panick taking him in the form of a break down. They’d start hurting him again now that Jean was gone, only it’d be worse - they’d pick him apart, maybe they’d kill him. He freaked out. In truth, he’d been around for nearly a year by then. The deserters had grown used to him being around, and pretty accustomed to it. He was, more or less, what he’d been trying to be for the entire time then. One of them. Packing his stuff up, he went to leave in the middle of the night from his parenoia however.. The man on night-watch tried to stop him for a simple conversation - just your average guy named Frank who wanted to talk to Joe. However, Koi’s mind wasn’t having any of it. They were trying to capture him and prevent him from escaping again. Whipping out his sword, Koi ‘SHH’d him into silence before slowly slinking backwards out of the camp, making gestures of ‘I’ve got my eye on you’ with two fingers as he held eye contact, disappearing into the night.

So, Koi wandered once again. Leaving the deserters behind him to head back south.. After all of that, never even seeing the northern territories. He hated the cold anyways.

ORIGINAL BACKSTORY:
APPEARANCE CHANGE:

Koi is a handsome, though slightly androgynous 19 year old of a relatively tall height, being six foot three inches tall (190.5 centimeters), and of very slim build. His body doesn't harbor much fat, and Koi is most certainly not bulked with muscles. He does however, maintain an athletic frame with a well-toned musculature. From his time in Garres' Pass however, where sunlight is scarce most of the day, his skin has become fairly pale. His hair is a very messy, spiky mass of pale blonde, though about two inches of the tips of said hair have been dyed a dramatic strawberry pink. His hair is made up of straight strands that seem to care little about neatness or physics, and his hair seemingly always falls over one of his eyes, all but completely obscuring it from view. This is mostly on purpose, as Koi is extremely insecure about the scar over that eye, given to him by his brother less than a year ago.

Koi's entire left arm has been covered with intricate artwork of waves and a colourful calico Koi-dragon winding around his arm. The art being based off of an old legend Jean told him of of a Koi who spent it's life climbing a waterfall, and was rewarded by the gods with transformation into a fierce and majestic creature.

SKILL CHANGE:
Beginner:
Blacksmithing - Koi is of very limited experience in this, has little ability beyond forging horseshoes and simple tools under supervision.

Acting - As a part of Jean's attempts to teach Koi to 'fit in' with the other mercenaries, he had to learn to project emotions that he didn't necessarily feel himself. Such as confidence, anger, violent intent. Koi... Isn't really good at this however. He can be passable sometimes, though

Pick pocketing - Koi's been able to feed himself with this skill for a few years of living on his own. After disuse for an extended period of time, Koi has essentially lost this skill. However being able to remember the general concepts of how to pick a pocket carefully, he could relearn it.

Apprentice:
Hand-to-hand combat - Koi has been trained in the basics of a rudimentary martial art, a very pragmatic system with little fluff. He knows how to throw a strike with proper form, and... How to receive one, hard earned from 'experience'.

Proficient:
Swordsmanship - Koi has also become somewhat attached to his swordsmanship. What started out with him being forced into things has become a way for him to make new friends.

PERSONALITY CHANGE:

Koi is an extremely laid back guy most of the time when he's around people. He's talkative, well-humored, friendly, and very approachable. However... Koi often forces this from himself to distract from his pains. He seeks out people to interact with and to befriend him because of the scars he received from his father, the most notable of this being his autophobic tendencies that developed after making friends in Magnus for the first time in his life.

Due to Koi's prolonged experience in an environment of people hostile to him, and being betrayed by Calvos, he's become somewhat sheltering of his normal personality, and withdrawn to a degree. At present he finds himself slightly paranoid about other's intentions and attitudes -- and tries to fit in by acting 'tough', in the manner Jean-Pierre taught him.

These tendencies however, can lead to some very self-destructive behavior as Koi's pursuit of making friends and ensuring that he never has to be alone often leads him to do impulsive, and down right dangerous and impulsive things to impress others.

Beneath this thin surface of pretended happiness is much sorrow, self-doubt and insecurity that can be crippling for Koi, despite how usually he portrays himself to others; acting confident and self-assured, behind a small laugh he might be hiding immense pain.

INVENTORY CHANGE:
[x1] Iron Sword -- Bastard Sword -- A hand-and-a-half sword of the garden variety. This sword was one of the many owned by the navy deserters in Garres' Pass. As one of Koi's chores as a slave was polishing blades, and after he'd become accepted among the others, it was simple enough to steal when he departed.

RE: [NEW] Return of Koi - SentaiPink - 02-03-2014

Hello Stezo, I'm going to be helping you with your return post. Lets get started...

Quote:“There was once a leader to the bandits inhoused in Garres’ Pass. They were once a part of a regimental military that was ordered to go to war on it’s own people - to stem an uprising in the northern territories. And in return, they deserted the military, breaking off to side with the rebellion they were ordered to fight.. The only problem being that the rebellion didn’t want their help. Traitors to their nation, and outcasts from the common people, they were forced to try and survive - together, or to fragment and die alone. A win-win situation, as both grew rich and well taken care of.”
--There maybe some large settlements, maybe a dozen guards to one, but that's about it. There are no armies, military or wars in the forbidden lands.

--How did he get his sword back?

That's all I've got right now. Sorry for the wait.

Updated. Changes to the backstory are in bold, also added a description to Koi's sword to explain it's acquisition.

RE: [Pending] Return of Koi - SentaiPink - 03-03-2014

Hey Stez! Good work, but I still have a little niggle~

Quote:Save for the loss of their mast.
There's a lot of ways to disable a ships ability to sail. The mast is a single huge log of wood, I can’t imagine it breaking without tipping the ship over or smashing holes through the middle of the decks. Maybe the yard could be broken or the sail torn off with no hope of repair? Or maybe this is some sort of illusion to the sort of issue I’m thinking. I don’t know. Could you correct or clarify this for me?

Just this last issue, I'm not sure if it is an issue or if I'm not comprehending your writing, just to be sure a bit of clarification would be dandy! Thanks.

I've made the correction you've asked for -- I /think/ this one could be more plausible, as a control surface such as a rudder has room for building momentum before coming to a jarring halt against the limits of it's axis, possibly causing damage. Correct me if I'm wrong, though ^^;

(Also I'd really like to thank you for picking up my application on the sparse time that you have now -- I know it must be really hard to spare.)
