[Approved] Kane Stengar - kiro_wolfsbane - 16-12-2014

Name: Kane Stengar
Age: 21 (December – AV41)
Gender: Male

Appearance:
5’8 in height, not as broad as average but well built with muscle to go with it. Black hair, kept short and neat. Clean shaven. Dull hazel eyes. He few scars, those he does have being mostly hidden beneath clothing with the exception of one across the back of his left hand, which restricts it from particularly fine motor activity, though most movement is fine.

Apparel:
Generally dark coloured clothing such as long sleeved shirts and trousers with a belt with boots of a similar hue and always with his sheathed falchion and generally a shield slung on his back. He wears this during any activity, though he sometimes adds a cloak or pouches for his throwing knives. Wears a circular medallion imprinted with a horse around his neck under his shirt.

Backstory:

Kane was born into an large family with two older brothers and a sister already and due to this his parents had less time for him than they might have if his family had been smaller but as he grew up, Kane found his family more of a comfort than a hindrance; a bastion of kindness that he could always turn to. However he was paid little attention much of the time and as he grew up he often found himself with excessive free time which he would often put to good use. When he was young he would often fantasize about being a great warrior, one who would be looked up to by all.
His hometown was a large place and it held a number of warriors and guards, unsurprisingly a number of them assisted in the Purge and as he aged Kane would hear many stories of the Purge. However Kane's own family did not assist as the believed that, despite what the race had done, it was not right to punish them for what had happened that they should let by-gones be by-gones. As such Kane is not one to hold a grudge and he holds no prejudices towards any race.
At the age of five Kane began to be taught, both academics and the usage of weaponry. He was not given a choice as to the weapon he was taught, instead he mentor chose on for him, the falchion with and without a shield, which Kane greatly disliked as the one handed weapon did not fit well into his ambitions. None the less, Kane took to his weapon studies and put in a much greater effort than he did anything else and focused almost all his free time into this. On the other hand, his schooling when much worse; he was placed into a class with a number of others near his age. He was a very serious young boy who found being civil with others difficult and often failed to filter his thoughts, unsurprisingly this led to him being widely disliked and this in turn led to light bullying, there was another side to this however as Kane had a violent temper and would start just as many problems as the bullies themselves. Another problem with his schooling was his simple lack of interest in most topics, he’d listen intently to anything to do with conflict but other matters failed to catch his attention and it was not uncommon for him to be being lazy and failing to complete work required of him.
Things only got worse as he did not change his habits and even his family started looking at his behaviour questioningly, around age nine; though all of this his only true respite were his sessions with his.
This eventually culminated in an argument between Kane and the ringleader of those who had been harassing him all these years in the middle of the area of the town designated for training and sparring where the two faced each other down and the resulting duel left the bully with a broken nose and Kane with plenty of bruises. Worse his mentor, unbeknownst to him, has witnessed the affair and the next time they met several things changed. First his mentor taught him a new pastime to keep focus him and also let him get much of his pent us frustration out – knife throwing. Similarly to his falchion training Kane took to this and from then on it would become a staple of his life, more so whenever he needed to cool off. His mentor also gave Kane another thing, one that scared him; a promise to stop teaching him if he ever saw anything like that again.
The next time Kane encounter the bullies, he did not do anything more than walk away leaving the bullies unharmed. The same could not be said for his knives.
Other than this growing up was uneventful, the civil war spread to where his home was but the town was walled and the guards were skilled, they kept it at bay though he often heard stories that would leave a rotten taste in his mouth.
At the age of fifteen he underwent a trial for him coming of age, nothing special just a test of what he could do and he passed the combat side of it easily enough, the test of his intelligence went far more poorly, not because he was a fool, but as mentioned he didn’t pay attention when he was being taught. He did however pass, albeit barely, as the previous nights were spent frantically going over information at the last second. He was formally pronounced an adult, presented with his own blade and shield. Finally, his mentor presented him with a new set of throwing knives.
Kane attempted to settle into life in his home but he found there wasn’t anywhere he quite fit in, as while there was a guard many of those who had given him many problems in the past had already joined that and Kane did not wish to work with such people. Also, his skill set was limited so that he was capable of little other than combat; so when a travelling merchant caravan passed though town offering to hire guards he jumped at the offer.
And so, he began his life for the next five years in a small merchant caravan, there were few people, one the trader, his apprentice and two other guards. He was at first regarded with wary caution but after giving aid in driving off several brigands the others warmed to him. Life on the road suited him and over time his old temper lost some of it’s edge as he made good friends, some of his first he even developed a sense of humour his old seriousness being worn away by his companions constant jesting. A year after he joined the caravan he was presented with a medal of sorts, a coin with a horse engraved onto it as a pendant signifying he was one of them. One of the guards he had befriended told him that his style of fighting would be suited to using a cloak in his off hand, where the movement of the cloak would be used to obscure the movements of his weapon so as to gain an advantage over his opponent, though while his falchion could make use of this it was not as well suited to it as a much shorter weapon such as a knife would be, similarly it could only be used when he did was not using a shield, either disarmed or forgone; so he acquired one and kept it with him. He saw many things in his time with the caravan, many different civilizations, people of all different kinds and much of the world; by the time it all ended he’d been everywhere from cathedrals to mass burials.
And it did end.
When Kane was twenty one, his caravan came under attack by brigands which was in itself not an uncommon thing, he’d fought off many an attack by the average crook however this time these were not average they were well trained and battle hardened and the three guards were hard pressed from the start and by the end of it all only two guards from the five people in the caravan remained standing and they were wounded. Kane had cuts all along his body, though most were not deeper than they looked. He did however have a cut that opened up he left hand after his shield had been disarmed from him and it bled profusely, thankfully the other guard, his friend knew enough to stem the bleeding but he could do little else. The bandits had taken much before they had backed off but they had not been able to steal everything, there was enough money left for each of them to live off till they could find work elsewhere so they split it and before they parted ways they agreed to meet again in the future.
Kane reclaimed his knives from those he had thrown at, or the ground where they had missed and slung his shield, if it could be called that missing a large portion of it’s upper side and the bottom being chipped and broken, onto his back.
Kane considered staying in the mainlands, finding work elsewhere but he’d seen much of it and he felt the Forbidden Lands sounded more suited to his talents anyway so he used what money he had to charter a ship to his new destination, Nightveil.

Personality:
Kane is, at his core, an honest good person who has been molded by his experiences. He is hard working, despite how he may first appear, and works well with most people. However his old temper can quickly flare up if he’s pushed despite somewhat mellowing during his time with the caravan though he is unlikely to resort to pointless violence as he once did. He still quickly loses interest in many things and his attention span ranges greatly depending on the topic.
Kane is happy to speak, though does things with an economy of effort that means he likes to do things quickly and efficiently and this applies to his interaction with others, he will rarely use a sentence when one word will do.
There is no deception to his character or deep internal confliction, his honesty makes him open and he doesn’t make a habit of hiding things, just not speaking of them if possible.
He has a light sense of humour and will attempt to make light of anything and everything if the time seems right but he can be serious when the situation demands it.
When Kane begins a task, even if it goes against his previously stated economy of effort, he finishes it because of the work ethic instilled in him by his original teacher.
One may describe him as free-spirited and uncaring at first glance but Kane does care deeply about those around him and would gladly risk his life for any one he calls a friend and wouldn’t hesitate to help one in need. Kane is also away of the gravity of reality and it’s difficulties so attempts to slip away from that when possible.
He does not give his trust quickly, but one earned he is fiercely loyal.

Capabilities:
Swordsmanship – Competent: Having trained all his life he knows his way round his blade, but his new injury to his left hand has left him lacking in the proficiency of his shield usage along side it.

Shields – Apprentice: See above.

Cloak Usage – Novice: A purely last ditch tactic he has rarely used, however he has done some training in it’s use. A tactic where the cloak was used to obscure to movement of the weapon to prevent the opponent from reacting until it was too late. It would be used in place of a shield in case of being disarmed or a shield being otherwise unavailable.

Knife Throwing – Apprentice: Something Kane does more as a hobby than anything else, however he has picked up a knack for it over the years. It is difficult for him to use in combat now due to his hand.

Trading/Bartering – Novice:
He picked up a few things from his years watching in the caravan.

Items:
Falchion – A short one handed, single edged blade with it’s weight concentrated in one end. Always in it’s sheath and one his person.

Four Balanced Throwing Knives – Kept in a pouch on his belt.

Tattered and Broken Shield – Kept slung on his back.

Pendant – Engraved with a horse

Dark Coloured Cloak – Worn or carried.

Additional Notes:
I unfortunately lack a skin and the ability to create on for myself, if someone could be kind enough to point me in the direction of something to help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

Alright, Kiro, I'll be handling your application.
  • First, I need to ask that you include a little more relation to the lore. Some indication if his hometown’s and/or family’s experience of the Purge would be a good place to start.
  • ‘Kane attempted to settle into life in his home but he found there wasn’t anywhere he quite fit in’ It was earlier mentioned that his home town had a guard. Why did he not join them?
  • ‘his style of fighting would be suited to using a cloak in his off hand’ You’ll have to explain this one, as I’m not hugely sure how a length of fabric will help in a fight. Also, how is he holding it if he is already holding a shield and sword?
The skill to go with this will also have to be explained in the same way. Until you mentioned it was for combat I was convinced that you meant camouflage or some such thing.

That's all for now. Bump this thread when you have finished the necessary edits and we can continue.
