[Approved]Brew's App, Rose returns - Brewstone - 30-06-2014 In Game Name(IGN): Brewstone Why do you want to join? One day I was walking along, I swear this is a true story, I stumbled across a picture I took of myself on top of a mountain in Austria with "Mesalia" engraved into a giant snow drift. Of course, I had to come find you once again. Now, I don't remember taking this picture, so I pulled up the roll of film from my trip to Germany, and it wasn't there. I'm freaking out. My spEcial photo-editing Software comes out And, LIke you wouldn't believe, there was the photo, Amazing. Anyway, I've been lurking in Mesalia Skype chat forever and I found a character I wanted to bring back. Do you have any RP'ing experience? I help write tabletop RPGs. I've played DnD more times than I can count, over 30. I used to be HGM on this server and it doesn't inflate my ego at all. I tried making my own server but realized it would never be as good as this one. Tell us a bit about yourself: I swear to the Great Lord Glaxablor that if you don't call me Brew or Mr. Brewstone I will destroy you. Brewstone...a name to inspire fear and laughter in all I face. They tremble at my mighty puns and my laugh as my Runed Spellblade slices them into pieces. I have conquered the Lich King, I have become the Lich King, I am Eternal, and a Magus of the Order of the Midnight Sun. I was the terror of the realms, and I have controlled the World of Darkness. I am Brewstone, Gamer, Roleplayer, Reader, and all around nice guy. You have been warned. I do not suffer fools gladly and people that cannot be bothered to use proper English will fall at my feet. Taste the Brew, rest upon the Stone, but never underestimate the Brewstone. Your Character Biography: Name: Rosalie, of Highport Age: 26 yrs Race: Mesalian Birthplace: Highport Appearance: Rosalie is a slim young woman in her mid twenties, 26 to be precise. She is fairly short, not even five and a half feet and slimly built with it, barely reaching 120 pounds. She is lightly muscled from working in a church as a maid for so long, and has a farmer's tan on her face and arms, from working in a garden. She typically wears a robe of white with a sun emblem on it and keeps the hood down, to keep her face always towards the sun. Her face is round and holds a beatific smile most of the time, it almost never slips.. Her large blue eyes are sometimes covered by her long hair, blonde, but not often, and she tries to keep it out of her face, without binding it. Her hands are surprisingly rough from her hard work, but to those who understand the sun tattoo on her upper back, it is no surprise. Female acolytes of Isohel must work hard to earn their respect. Personality: Rosalie is a wonderfully sweet person and she expresses it through the way she handles the people that she meets. She always has a smile on her face and openly greets many of the people she encounters. She likes top strike up conversation with random people around her, especially if they continue to be receptive to talking with her. Rose also follows the path she has chosen, so long as it remains true to her nature. She would follow her friends into the fires of the Nether, and her God as well, so long as they remained true to their nature. Of course, Rosalie has some character traits that aren't too good or bad. She can be bold, when the situation permits, but it typically shy around those that are older than her and in positions of power. However, that doesn't stop her from enjoying open displays of affection and she has no problems with hugging people she knows as soon as she sees them. Rose prefers to be outdoors, especially during the daytime and finds most time spent indoors during the day to be a waste, unless she's doing something important. Lastly, she's curious. Rose wants to understand everything, that's why she's with the Church of Isohel. Since the day she could walk, Rose has been getting into things and this hasn't stopped as she grew older. Rosalie, while perfect in many ways, is still young and fairly sheltered. She doesn't quite understand the potential for evil in the world and has a hard time being somber during tense encounters. She has a habit of assuming people are joking when they deliver bad news and can often make the situation worse with an ill timed laugh. Of course, during stressful situations she can clam up and become weepy, her emotions are very obvious to nearly everyone and she does a poor job of keeping the strong negative ones in control. Of course, when she isn't under stress she likes to discuss her religion with others, openly, loudly, and frequently, She doesn't know too many details, but she hopes everyone will eventually become devout followers of Isohel. Biography Rosalie grinned from her perch on the boat. She inhaled the sweet ocean air and let the hood down on her robe. It wasn't often that members of the Church would leave to go to new lands and she was glad to be one of the few. She wasn't a full priest, but she had been a good aid to Father Mathias so he had let her go visit her friend, Thomas, in a remote town called Alroc. Ro' shivered in excitement. Thomas would be so glad to see her, and he didn't know that she was coming, he had a giant hug in store for him and he didn't even know it. She stretched her arms a bit and wandered around the ship, her eyes glancing over the journal she had brought with her, it was full of her secrets and her history. She had started keeping it when she was really young, around 10, and she hadn't shown it to anyone. Simply by reading that one book, someone would know all of her secrets, all of her hidden loves, her doubts about the Church, some of the things she thought about the Elder Priests. Everything was in there. Rosalie picked up the book and settled in. She would go over it once more, like she did every time she moved, to get a sense of how she had got where she was today. The first few pages were not in Rose's hand writing, but in that of her father's, Darren. It described her first few years of life, before she had properly learned to write and events that she didn't remember. She always glanced over this part with a weight in her heart, and her smile slipped as she read it. She hadn't seen her father in a long time. She had last seen him when she was admitted to the Church of Isohel , the God of the Sun. It was a beautiful day and her father, kind as always, had ridden out to the Church to wish her good luck with her training. She never saw him again, her studies consumed all of her time, and when she finally was able to visit, he wasn't there. Shaking her head against such dark thoughts, she reads the first section. It begins with her birth, in the town of Highport, where her mother, Sona, and her father lived before they shortly moved to Auria. She was very young during this time, hardly two, and she remembers little of her time before she was ten. She does, however, remember the part about Thomas, her best friend. When they first met she took him to her house and her dad was so angry when he found out. Rose pleaded with him to let Thomas stay, almost like most girls would have done with a puppy, but Thomas was better than anything else, even a puppy. He was right at two years older than her, and she loved him already. A smile creeps on to her lips again as she reads about her escapades with Thomas, like getting lost in the forest, or hunting for monsters. They were simpler days. As she flips the pages she moves past the section about Thomas and instead she finds a few pages ripped out, and the frown returns, like it always does when she gets here. Katryna was a good friend of hers, she help Rose find flowers and gave her some clothes even though Rose was so young and Katryna had a child of her own. It seemed that Darren hated Katryna, even though she was so nice. Her dad forbid her from meeting with Kat, ever, and having to tell Katryna that Rose would never be able to see her again was the first time she cried from sadness, one of the few in her life. Rosalie flips through the pages until she reaches the point where it shifts from being an adult's handwriting to her own, although much more crude and less flowing, and returns the smile to her face. What was in the past was in the past, that's why she read this journal every time she moved to a new location. Even through the smiles, someone could see the glimmer of tears in her eyes. Life was so much harder now, and although for the rest of the journal it got better, she would still never reclaim the time she lost as a child. Rose moved back to the mainland where she lived in, as her 12 year old self described it, "a castle" in the town of Avan. In reality it was a simple manor, but to a twelve year old, a castle it was. It was the only reason she'd leave. Leaving Thomas behind, and all the wonderful people of Auria. The nice mayor who gave her flowers, that silly alchemist person that gave her and Thomas paints, even now she remembers the feelings of sadness. She moves swiftly past these parts, it's too hard to read, still. All the feelings poured out here. Her secret crush for Thomas, all the sad memories, all the hate directed towards her father for making her move. The first time she read through the journal to remember the good times, it was all so sad, and she couldn't handle it. During Rosalie's time in the manor, she met other people, her grandparents and others, but they didn't leave a lasting impression. She became reserved for the first time in her life, but it all changed when she got her first letter from Thomas. It detailed him leaving Auria and that the volcano near Auria had blown up! It was an amazing story and she often wrote how brave he was to have gotten through it. Rosalie picked up artistry, one of her few skills from her childhood, and practiced it in full, sending paintings of Thomas' adventures to him. She filled her room with paintings. She left her mopey self behind and found new strength in her art. The sun was a frequent theme in her art, as she saw the coming of the dawn as a resurrection of herself, although at the age of 14, she hardly understood it properly. Over the next four years she spent time learning her art and living in the lap of luxury. Rosalie became warm again, and socialized among the higher caste, but never found love, as was expected of her. Many boys sought her, and she was warm and open with them , but never moved beyond being a sweet friend. Occasionally, one would be able to snatch a midnight kiss, but these people were the luckiest of their peers, and few ever equaled the feat. In a way, she was in an ivory tower of her own making. She refused to let people get too close, but was constantly around them. Four years passed as she lived in the manor and her number of friends was large. When Rosalie decided it was time to leave her home, people were shocked, and they were more so when she chose to join the Church of Isohel. In celebration, and to commemorate her going away, her Father and grandparents hosted a massive party, rivalled by none since. Every boy and girl in the area came to attend and a few High Lords were rumored to be in attendance. Rosalie received many well wishes and gifts from the patrons, and she was happy. Her favorite gift, of course, came in the form of a letter from Thomas, with him also wishing her well (the letter is actually pressed into the journal). The revelry came to a close and Rosalie retired for the night, even more firm in her believe that it was time to join the Church. She could help people there and would learn more about the world, her curiosity and desire to save the people of the world would be sated. The day came and only her father came to see her off. It was a tearful goodbye as Rosalie, now a young woman of 18, gave her father one last hug as she left him. The priests were kind, but stern. They put her to work as a maid for a time, to prove her devotion to Isohel, and it never wavered. The parting words of her father ringing clearly in her head, "I worked hard for you to be able to live a life like this, make sure to live it well." She never once was actually able to work as an assistant to a priest, for those duties were reserved for the male acolytes, but she was allowed to help in every other aspect, and help she did. She baked, she tended stew, she sorted books in the Cathedral's library, she worked as a nurse. Every job they could throw at her she overcame and conquered. She learned how to take care of the sick, she learned how to bake bread, she learned how to clean floors, all for her father and for the future glory of Isohel. Every day she was up with the sun in the morning rituals and every sundown she went to bed tired. The days were long, but Rosalie knew that she could overcome this. For four long years she worked as a maid of in the Cathedral, and when the time finally came to select her place among the members of the Church, Rosalie knew exactly where she wanted to go, the scribes. The scribes copied books and engraved the art on them. As one of them she would be able to cultivate her flowers to make colored inks, she would be able to work outdoors making the black ink, she would be able to practice her artistry, and if anyone saw a scribe writing a letter, no one questioned who it was for. Ro' kept up common correspondence with Thomas throughout this time, and wished him well in his travels. For once, it wasn't just him that got to share exciting stories. Once more, knowledge of the outside world tried to intrude upon Rose's life, but once again it was shut out. Her devotion to her work took up most of her time, and the Elder priests were tight-lipped out what was happening on the outside, instead telling her to focus on her duties. And so, four more years passed with Rosalie perfecting her art as a scribe and she once again started to pine for what could be. She had tried to visit her father and was unsuccessful, and was beginning to grow tired of life inside the Cathedral. As much as she enjoyed life among the priests, she desired to roam the world, to meet more people, to spread happiness as far and wide as she could, and that’s when she hit on a perfect idea. She would visit her life-long friend. He had been there since the beginning and Ro' knew he would be happy to have her as a guest for a while. Alroc seemed like a new and interesting place full of people to meet and gardens to tend. It certainly sounded like the place could use a bit of color, it was in a desert, for Isohel's Grace! So, with a bit of charm and a history of service, Rosalie was able to secure leave from the Cathedral, as long as she promised to spread the word of Isohel and not be absent too long. She packed her things and found a boat. Thomas had been very helpful in giving her the location of Alroc, and so, a few coins later, she was on her way. All she had to her name was her white robes of Isohel and her desire to spread joy to the remaining Mesalians in dark times. Specify your character's skills: Skills: -Rose has always been a cute child, and she remains a cute woman. While this isn't actually a trained skill, she is awful cute. -Apprentice cleaning: During her training period at the Cathedral, she was forced to work as a maid and as such was forced to clean the whole Cathedral multiple times over her four year training period. She is more skilled at cleaning than someone with not experience, but hardly put any serious thought into it and only has the experience she does from working this trade for four years. -Apprentice cooking: Rose spent some time working in the Cathedrals kitchen and preferred it to working in the infirmary. Cooking was much nicer than listening to the groans of those in pain and injured. She mainly worked as an assistant in the beginning but was forced to learn more out of necessity to provide quality to the priests. -Novice Medicine: She worked as a doctor's assistant during her training in the Cathedral of Isohel, and did her job well, but this never was an interest of Rose's. More often than not she preferred working in the kitchen to the infirmary, and while she does know a little, it would only be enough to follow a doctor's order or to treat the simplest of wounds. -Apprentice Gardening: Rosalie has almost always been fascinated by plants and how they grew. She let this desire lapse until recently when the need to grow plants for dye for the Cathedral became an important part of her work. -Competent Artistry(Painting and script writing): Painting has always been a hobby of hers, and she used it heavily in her teenage years to express herself and to paint the journeys of her best-friend, Thomas. Recently, in the past four years, she had begun to learn the trade of inscription and engraving, while copying religious texts from the priests in the Cathedral of Isohel. Knowledge: Basic Religious Knowledge (Isohel): Ro' knows more than the average person, but she doesn't actually know that much. She is more familiar with the standard rituals, but isn't privy to the higher knowledge because of her gender. Advanced Language (Common): Rose is well versed in common, she has spoken it her entire life and continues to. Her time with the Church of Isohel has taught her a slightly more advanced vocabulary than the average nobleman. Do your character bring anything to the setting (part from clothes)? Nope, some robes and a journal that doesn't need an In-character item. Anything you'd like to add: I really do have a picture of me with Mesalia engraved into a snow drift, I'll see if I can find it around. RE: [New]Brew's App, Rose returns - LuckyLeaf - 01-07-2014 Hey Brewstone and welcome back, I'm Leaf, and I'll be the one grading your app. -=oOo=-
So your app is almost good to go, but there are some bits here and there that you might have overlooked. Or it could be just me getting confused, but I'd like clarification if that's the case. Puppy Thomas: Here is something that confused me: "She was very young during this time, hardly two, and she remembers little. She does, however, remember the part about Thomas, her best friend." These two sentence here makes it sound very much like she had met Thomas when she was two, when she was in Highport. Now I'm not entirely sure how the pair's story go, but I'm quite sure that she wouldn't remember a boy she'd met when she was two, and that the first time they'd met was in the town of Auria. If it happens that she does indeed remember Thomas and she did meet Thomas when she was two in Highport, throw a shoe at me, but if it isn't, please make it clear for me. Thanks! Gate to the Dusk Realm: You mentioned that Rose didn't get to hear much about the gate opening due to her being a nobleman's daughter, and thus being sheltered from disturbing news, but in our current timeline, the gate opened only about 3 to 4 years ago. This means that Rose would have been about 22 or 23 when the news would've gotten to her in the Church of Isohel. And since the news would have been a common topic and there was no reason for the priests and other acolytes to refrain from talking about it to Rose, I'd like you to tell me how this affected her, or if it didn't still, why it didn't. Flowers to ink: Don't quote me on this, but I am quite certain you can't get black ink from flowers. Unless the scribes in the Church of Isohel recorded using different colors of ink, I would very much doubt that it would've been common practice to grow flowers for ink. From what I can find on how people made ink before, they mostly seem to come from a combination of certain minerals, soot, tree barks or branches, or tar. As I said, I'm not entirely sure if black ink really didn't come from flowers, but feel free to tell me if I'm wrong. -=oOo=-
Moving on to skills, I only have one quirk. Gardening: Considering Rose started to maintain a garden only once she became a scribe and since there is no mention of Rose working in gardens before that, I'll have to ask you to lower this skill, or give a reason as to why Rose would have this skill. -=oOo=-
That's it! Bump the thread once you're done editing. RE: [Pending]Brew's App, Rose returns - Brewstone - 01-07-2014 All changes are highlighted in red. Puppy Thomas: This was just poor phrasing, it was actually closer to when Rosalie was 6 and Thomas was 8. Added a phrase to better indicate the time frame on this. Gate to the Dusk Realm: This was just me being bad at the newer time system, I was still thinking one month was one year. Added a few sentences in the second to last paragraph to clear this up. Flowers to ink: I was thinking of colored ink in something like this. Also added a mention about creating black ink. Gardening: I was thinking that four years working in a garden and harvesting plants would make her an apprentice at keeping plants alive, harvesting them, and replanting them. However, if it's an issue it can be changed. RE: [Pending]Brew's App, Rose returns - LuckyLeaf - 01-07-2014 I think just a couple of things, and you should be good to go. -=oOo=-
Sheltered: I did see that you added a bit about her hearing news of the gate opening, but I think you forgot to remove the bit about her hearings the news when she was about, er, 14, I think. I'll quote: "Of course, some knowledge of some portal possibly opening reached her, but it was of little consequence, it was far away and couldn't reach her. It was frowned upon to talk about it and so she let the information lapse, but let her social life blossom." Gardening: As for this, I decided that you can have it as apprentice; seeing as she was probably relieved from maid duties when she became a scribe, and that cleaning isn't really a difficult skill to learn, I think the skill set is feasible. -=oOo=-
I think that's it, let me just get a word with Zark and then I can approve this. RE: [Pending]Brew's App, Rose returns - Brewstone - 01-07-2014 Sheltered: Removed the specified quote. Gardening: Left this as it was. And Thomas I'm referring to in the story is the one played by Firedog, but I've already spoken to him, just in case it wasn't clear. |
