Remilia "Earthheart" Aspen - Dark - 30-03-2014

Personality:
Personality: Remilia is a bashful individual, there's no denying that. To the simplest of compliments, to a bow, to some other form of flattery, you'll see the tall woman become flustered on what to do, sometimes just responding in kind with a tomato face. Compliments being one thing, it's actually harder to impress her. A young scholar, and possible addict of the maths and sciences, it'd take nothing less than some formula being put to work on a future home, some measurements being taken of large things and being proven accurate, or some natural phenomenon being explained to her face first to impress her firsthand.
She's considered a genius by some, able to calculate mathematical problems and map out areas faster than what a few of her much older peers were able to. Rem admits nothing of the sort, but it's obvious from reports that she's very capable in the brains department. She is, however, prone to over thinking simple ideas, and taking philosophical and metaphorical sayings too literal.
Under the belief of the goddess of Earth, Drymaterras, Rem stays to acknowledge that the goddess and the earth is to be respected and worshiped in kind by replanting trees and nurturing/protecting wildlife. She's pacifistic in a kind and soothing nature. There's one thing she would never bring herself into doing however.
At the spite of her own beliefs, she would never go so low as to explain things as "the work of Dryma". Her views dictate that the goddess put it together, and all is able to be solved using reasoning, calculations, and scientific study. She may never be able to explain some things, as she's aware of herself. But she'll use off time from surveying, map making and overall Cartography to research, continue to study, and stuff her nose into books, constantly trying to learn more and more so questions can get their appropriate, mathematical, and logical answer.
Rem has a strong curiousity, going out of her way time and time again to ask questions, talk of theorizing how far an item is, or how large said item is. This would tie back to her extreme liking of physical works being out to use by nature. What is the slope of this hill? The angle of which this tree is in relativity to the hill? Her world as she views it is made up of numbers. Her curiosity can cause some more harmful effects towards. She can come off as nosy, though honestly it would be by mistake, as she would sometimes prod a question too far as to harm the feelings of even friends.

Physical Looks: Remilia has fair skin all over, unscarred and undamaged up to this point in time. Along with her short description of hair, her face is sharp and thin. Her nose, perky. Her lips, an average in thickness as a light pink color covers them. Her eyes are, whenever she's not getting flustered or worked up, calm and analytic. Her body has been found to be relatively curvy, though she wasn't a goddess by looks in such a respect. At times of heavy research, Rem'd look tired in the daytime as she spends hours up at night with her books.
Attire: Romanesque long robes, complex multilayer in both Earth Greens and bright whites. On her head lays a green leaf laurel, something she frequently wears along with the robe. The whole look in a whole has both a scholar look and is of religious significance, and doesn't offer much benefit in hard physical labor, which she can not do effectively anyways. Not noticed easily with a woman who seldom doesn't wear shoes, she was born flatfooted and never developed proper feet archs, having shoes custom-fit for such a case.

The Island they finally arrived on appeared to be of nice size, and this sole island wasn't alone. The second mate described it also having multiple smaller islands in a string behind it as the vessel started reaching its port. The great feeling of being on land once more brought great relief to Rem, taking the first few steps onto the island. Immediately, she caught sight of someone she has never seen before. She remembered quite clearly there were others beyond just them. The moment of feeling good and meeting this new person out to greet any passengers was astonishing. For this woman had just met a Lucin.
Dr. Slone, after unpacking their equipment and making home in a previously vacant home, escorted the four of them to the clinic to have some check ups done. Remilia was astonished by how different his eyes looked as he worked on a couple of other patients, glowing as some form of aura seemed to encompass his hands. She didn't understand any of that whatsoever, and assumed it was some sort of healing method. They each got checked out individual. Quick little things, nothing too tedious or long. When it was her turn, she pursued to ask questions about him, examining him almost as much as he was her. Seemed the doctor was easily irritated by the constant questions as he attempted getting his own work done. Dr. Slone's sarcastic remark about her being the real doctor in this situation made her feel a bit more at home, along with several other things he threw out verbally like commenting on her being a tall woman, almost reminding him of someone else he knows. She would go on to meet Xitians as well, along with others of her own with vastly different backgrounds.
The Cartography group had made home in Auria, temporarily staying there as day in and day out they'd take to hills, and streets. Doing their business. The younger and less experienced Rem would take from Guile's observations, and watch him draw the fine details of distances. Some days, she would even go off on her own and do her own stuff. After a little over a season had passed, she was recreating maps of the island her partner had originally done. When compared to her superior however, it seemed they were much better maps overall. Better drawn, better detailed. They looked an entire league above that of Guile's own work. He would grow jealous with time. But, he had planned for this far beyond a season.
Much like her first voyage across the seas, Remilia would be in bed, sicker than a dog as the waves would upset her body. Was the price to pay. And she did not mind all too much, all she needed to accomplish on board was read maps, read, and write. It was otherwise uneventful for the woman. It was, for her sake, a quicker ride there. So, as the ship comes to a stop and the people around her get their packed things and head on out to dock, she had grown enough relief to start stumbling out of the ship's hull, to look upon a new lands she had, again, never seen.
Simon Aspen had much of what he wanted in life. He was a first son, in a well to do family that has lived on for generations prior to the Veld War. Their home city switches from time to time due to events going down in the middle realm, but they still held a grasp firm on their money. The Aspens were Mapmakers. Philosophers. Even inventors. Most of the lineage had fallen around a devout course of knowledge. They were not too widely known for their inventions and works however. Several times in the past, the first of these inventors could not keep any hold to say that their stuff was of their creation. People quickly took their ideas, added upon it, and called it their own. Frankly enough, these would include several instruments that were essential to accurately participating in Cartography. Such tools were a more stable and measurable Groma stick, and others that held more scientific value like several physical objects used for universal measurement standards (Albeit their inaccuracy due to the technology of the time). Some other things that were deemed invaluable were stolen from them one way or another. It did not affect Simon's childhood directly however.
This young man was brought up like many other first sons of his lineage. He was pampered, and overworked with book and study. He was expected to be the head of the house once his father passed the reigns. And thus, he must be made to be the brains. That's how it typically was. The girls were to be brought up into cooking, and common skills they viewed as housewife worthy. it was the classical sexism system the family ran on. In addition, younger brothers were to be brought up as lesser mathematicians, spending less time on their younger ones.
In the large town of Grendil, where the Aspens resided as one of the two larger families, held a firm grasp on the local church of Dryma. The Earth goddess. A family that was once agnostic in their pursuit of knowledge had slowly turned to faith after money problems started reducing the family's budget. Simon would be the first child to try being taught that the pursuit of knowledge also had to come from the bestowed faith of the goddess. The church itself helped with his education, elder clergyman almost taking over the education of the child absolutely, like an apprentice.
Simon Aspen would grow up a healthy, fit, well educated, and devoted Drymanian, carrying out the studies of his family as soon as his father was to step down from being the head of the family. Like several others before him, he'd marry a fine wife, establishing the legal bonds and emotional bonds with said woman. They soon had their first child around a year after, quick to deliver their first offspring. This small baby girl wouldn't be given a name by her mother.

The Middle Realm's civil war was going to have little affect on a town far away from the action, insignificant enough to not matter. As the young girl was growing, education would have to take a similar route as her father's. At the ripe age of six years old, she was taken under the wing of a clergyman named Hilton, one of the oldest and wisest in the large town. She was to begin, instead of the home works of many, to be taught in the maths and sciences as she was the only child of Simon.
Relatives were constantly nagging Simon into wedding another woman, and letting her bear a male for the family. Several times, they would plead that it'd only cause disruption if he had not son to keep the wealth. And several times back, the fatherly man refused to do such, holding too dearly onto his lost beloved Remilia years ago. He'd turn down any offers sent up to him as plausible wives and done what he must to continue educating his daughter. His parents eventually gave in to the lack of wanting a wife. They still felt highly insulted that the young man wouldn't at least have a woman bear a male for the family, but eventually suggested that Remilia be taught as he had been. This seemed to work in favor to what Simon had in mind for the young girl.
Even in her very early years, she developed quickly the thoughts and ideas that revolved around her lessons. Hilton would often describe the child as "Having an eccentric interest in several formulas I have shown her. After showing her how these concepts were to be used in the real world she would 'dance' around in a childish glee, like she had seen the goddess herself.", as one note would entail. Remilia was taught to jot down notes, and read them over countless amounts of times, which she had done. She started finding herself often using a hard wood plank and quill to take notes, even when lessons were not given directly to her. Rem's writing skills could have used some help however.
She started keeping a journal at nine, writing down things she saw of value.

"Father was proud of me when I recited several different shapes I could accurately find side lengths and volume for. I told him it was simple to me, but he still loved it. I could see it upon his face! Mister Hilton says that I'm a fast learner, And that it'll be no time before I can actually start doing some of the hard stuff
Oh, and yes. I measured my first area just out in our courtyard. Father wants me to make an accurate map of it and see how well I do for a first try and no experience. I'm not sure if I can draw that well even with the help of my tools, but I can't let down my father, and my goddess. I do pray I can do well!"

Plenty of baby's feet are flatfooted when they are born, even up until the later single digit years. They have yet to develop the proper arc in order to evenly support weight on the foot. Hilton was finding the girl to be extremely clumsy. The older man decided to complain to Simon, issuing that she has broken several of his instruments from "falling on top of them". The young girl's feet have still yet to develop the proper feet arcs, and though it's not guaranteed that such a condition could harm her, Simon quickly caught the awkward way her legs would curve slightly in and a slight wobble after periods of walking around and After he first started noticing this as the child would walk around, Rem would complain about her feet. A local shoemaker was tasked with making custom-fit shoes for the growing girl, and would continue to do so for as long as she lived under her father's roof.
At this point, she started becoming sensitive about herself. Achievements and compliments given respectively to her had once made the child joyous, now left her bashful, often searching for words. Up to this point, she has had seldom friends among the few townspeople who had children of around her age. It would prove to hurt her social abilities as she realized this fact. She didn't stop taking the tutoring of Hilton. In fact, she seemed to be even more driven as the seclusion worsened. She's stay up later, writing by candlelight in her notebooks and reading by torchlight her books assigned to her. Secluding herself even from her father at times inside her room and studies.
This shy behavior made her puberty mentally unnoticeable to those around her. She was growing now into a tall child at the age of fifteen, quickly growing past average heights for Mesalians of her time. She'd continue to grow for some time, her features maturing into a young adult as time went by. At this age of time, Simon started bringing the young Rem out to do survey work with him, watching his precise calculations and measurements of the properties of town. She'd also take precise notes on how he would map the area geographically, copying previous maps of his down for herself as practice to see just how accurate her own work was. Remilia was still asking questions, but the more she aged, the less of an answer she got.

". . .-My father and I were upon Verdun Hill overlooking the town, taking a calm, relaxing break from working by having a meal outside under a cherrybark oak. Soft breads and cooked fishes of a random assortment. The sun had just about winked out of view from the clouds above and into the horizon beyond. It would be just about time to head home and read my books for the last hours of the night. My dear father, Simon. . . Dryma, bless his heart, the man was slowly eating as he watched the sun slowly sink away from our view. I carefully watched him, waiting to see if something was to come up in conversation.
Over a minute passed with nothing to talk about. My dear father was most likely reminiscing on something with the sunset in mind... So I instead spoke up, tossing a piece of bread out in front of myself for an example. How was it that things decided to fall back to the ground, even when purposely thrown up into the skies above? I asked him this, which caught his attention, finally breaking his trance only to give me a shrug of his shoulders. This... stirred something within me, I suppose. I was so used to people teaching me, telling and demonstrating what and how something worked. I had asked the same question to my mentor, he gave a more lackluster answer, explaining the goddess made it so. To think my tutor would tell me he didn't know and made lazy work of just saying the goddess was the reason and cause for it.

The Clergymen often challenged her with difficult problems only to have them overcome relatively easily by the young woman of seventeen. Hilton was thoroughly surprised by some of her accurate representations of formulas she had remembered over the past years. The aging man started seeing her as more of a friend by this time than a student, challenging her to competitive chess games, exchanging friendly debates with one another. She had grown attached to her mentor like a close uncle.
News of official ends to the civil war that ravaged so many other towns came up on a couple town billboards, sparking a remarkable rejoice as they could finally and effectively open themselves up again to traders more frequently. What they feared would have happened to their town never did during such a time. Official word of this nature got Simon into thinking of an idea, pitching an offer to send his daughter and several others to venture outward, to find a ship setting sail to rumored new lands. Remilia was a qualified Cartographer by skill, yet she was far from an expert in the field. Hilton's superiors suggested some other fine cartographer along with a couple of other fine people to serve as caretakers would be good enough to suffice.
The young woman was both thrilled and fearful of such a voyage out to sea. She hasn't stepped foot out of the village before this, better yet on a ship in open waters. Her curiosity for these new places are too much for her conservationist self to just decline just a chance for work experience, new things, and possible discoveries. She was promptly put into a small group of people tasked with the mapping of the Forbidden lands.

The last week before her departure was to come, Remilia would go on to properly give farewell to her father and relatives living with her, visiting the church to visit Hilton for a last few days of study before the day arrived to pack her belonging onto the caravan cart.
Journal Entry 740:
"I had packed my things and thoroughly checked through my list to ensure that I had what I needed while I was packing today, seeing as my partner Guile and his work-hands decided today would be the best of days to embark to the port town and board a ship to these new lands I was promised. The horses took noticeably more than a few minutes to calm down after being harnessed before they would push forward slowly. That's when my dear mentor and friend Hilton decided to stumble out of the church doors in a fray, calling out for Guile's hand to stop the cart for a brief moment.
After the cart made it's stop, causing me slight discomfort as wood slammed against my rear abruptly, the old man walked around to my side of the cart, a peculiar headpiece in his hands as he jumped on it's side, telling me to lower my head before placing it atop my head. It was a laurel, one I recognized from a small statue within Dryma's church. It was a scholarly reward, to acknowledge my genius and schoolwork, he says. Even at my young age, I've already accomplished a lot, he told me more, adjusting it atop my head. Ohh, I couldn't handle such a thing. I am just a woman who found herself captivated, right? Why was it I deserved such a thing as it?
It mattered not. I accepted it as a memento to him. I would probably not see him in some time, likewise for him. It was more to him to give me this as a reminder of the times we had together, my teacher and myself. I did adore him for his ability to be able to tech me so. I suppose I could even confess a fatherly love as I do my birth father, but I didn't. My face was far too flushed for me to do any more than a nod, quickly turning away from the man with a stiff nod before looking straight forward as the cart continued, Hilton jumping off and continuing to wave me off.
I should have said more, I felt. But I am off to see places yet to have been touched by professional cartographers. This experience. . . could be once in a lifetime."

"Dryma must be pitying me on this voyage across waters...
I've never felt so ill in my life. The constant tugging and rolling as the waves pushed the boat just about everywhere has made me sick for the majority of this ride. I'd spend days and nights bedridden, doing nothing but reading the works of numerous scientists and philosophers. I could not effectively read them half of the time however, my stomach and eyes did not agree with keeping the memories in my head long enough for me to process them. At the very least, it had passed time.
The ship's captain tells us this morning it is most likely just to be around somewhere between this evening and tomorrow morning. he didn't seem to enjoy me questioning how he'd know this. Did he not make the proper calculation of distance and time traveled on average from his previous out goings into the sea to this place? I apologized, and as I write feel a bit bad for doing such a thing. I just thought he would have been one to actually write down this stuff, being the captain and such. Though it does seem he is very confident in his initial estimations. I cannot blame him.
Guile and the other prepare to have the brought goods and instruments moved off the ship as soon as they arrive. I wasn't told of there already being a place for us in this town called "Auria" until half of this ill ride was over. It was odd, I have not been informed of such arrangements. The Island they finally arrived on appeared to be of nice size, and this sole island wasn't alone. The second mate described it also having multiple smaller islands in a string behind it as the vessel started reaching its port. The great feeling of being on land once more brought great relief to Rem, taking the first few steps onto the island. Immediately, she caught sight of someone she has never seen before. She remembered quite clearly there were others beyond just them. The moment of feeling good and meeting this new person out to greet any passengers was astonishing. For this woman had just met a Lucin.
Dr. Slone, after unpacking their equipment and making home in a previously vacant home, escorted the four of them to the clinic to have some check ups done. Remilia was astonished by how different his eyes looked as he worked on a couple of other patients, glowing as some form of aura seemed to encompass his hands. She didn't understand any of that whatsoever, and assumed it was some sort of healing method. They each got checked out individual. Quick little things, nothing too tedious or long. When it was her turn, she pursued to ask questions about him, examining him almost as much as he was her. Seemed the doctor was easily irritated by the constant questions as he attempted getting his own work done. Dr. Slone's sarcastic remark about her being the real doctor in this situation made her feel a bit more at home, along with several other things he threw out verbally like commenting on her being a tall woman, almost reminding him of someone else he knows. She would go on to meet Xitians as well, along with others of her own with vastly different backgrounds.
The Cartography group had made home in Auria, temporarily staying there as day in and day out they'd take to hills, and streets. Doing their business. The younger and less experienced Rem would take from Guile's observations, and watch him draw the fine details of distances. Some days, she would even go off on her own and do her own stuff. After a little over a season had passed, she was recreating maps of the island her partner had originally done. When compared to her superior however, it seemed they were much better maps overall. Better drawn, better detailed. They looked an entire league above that of Guile's own work. He would grow jealous with time. But, he had planned for this far beyond a season.

"If it were not for me forgetting and leaving behind my last works outside yesterday, I would... be sad to say my fate would be infinitesimally doomed to nothing short of being without any belongings.
As I exited my room that morning, I noticed a peculiar amount of missing equipment that had once laid about the main rooms of this home. I assumed at first it was that they went off early to beat a storm. It seemed most logical at the time. I didn't want to start panicking and thinking ahead of myself. So, I went ahead and asked some of the residents there.
A middle-aged man with a glorifying tan and darker clothing was the first to give an answer. Darkus as he was called. he was kind enough to tell me where they had headed, directing me to the ships. His answer seemed a bit hysteric. A cane in hand, the guy in a gruelingly dull tone constantly repeating himself. He wasn't a bad man, but what troubled me was when another individual, a middle aged woman, apologized and escorted the man back with her. I felt myself a bit flustered at the point. Rather to believe the man or not, I was not sure.
It was taking far too long for them to get back at one point in the day. I was enjoying my evening dinner, having taken back my measly amount of instruments, notes, and other accessories. I've again went out into town to search for them, only to get what the aging man was saying to be true. They have left me behind, taking what I had from me. I would calculate Guile will claim all works as his own as soon as he was able. . . I'm left with nothing but an empty home. I had to find something.
A ship rolled around earlier today, bearing nothing but passengers and tasked to take back materials to load them onto the ship. I had to find out something, anything before I was forced to go home. My first pick was lucky, as I assumed this smaller woman was a crew member and asked where the captain was, only to get that she herself was the captain, introducing herself as Ezri. I was curious as to where these people had come from, asking where she came from and where she was off to next. Another island, somewhere in the forbidden lands, it was said. Though I was required to do some service to her in order to obtain this ride.
So here I write in my journal, multitasking between summing the events of such petty betrayal and observing several maps she wanted me to look over. I am not one to complain. I'm on my way with what's left of my belongings to prove my workings are not to be stolen from me. I'll head to this "Alroc", hopefully to openly and freely research without fear of having what I've got stolen from me.
Oh. I feel ill already on this boat."
