CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name: John Atticus

Age: 17

Gender: Male

Appearance: Small in weight and stature with pale skin. John inherited dark blue eyes from his father and light brown hair from his mother. Clothing is of little concern to him but most days he will wear simple clothing fit for travel (a buttoned up shirt, belt and handwraps.)

Personality: John had always been the quietest of his siblings. While they squabbled he would stay silent and rarely take part in an arguement or fight. Even with the few years of experience he had working on a farm, John did not learn much. Only finding the arts, in particular literature and writing, interesting. This meant that while others socialised he sat inside and read.
Many would not think it, due to his poor background, but John is very well-spoken. However, only few would ever find this out as not many have the pleasure of talking with him for very long. John only really shows interest in others if it seems it would make a fitting story. This is why he lacks the sense to stay away from arguments and fights. Finding every word yelled fascinatiing.
Having a rather short attention span, many subjects John has not learned to enjoy are quickly forgotten. This results in skills in areas such as science or politics learnt slowly but areas which he enjoys such as the fine arts are picked up more easily.
In need of inspiration John craves new sights and experiences so it is rare to see him in the same place for very long.

Backstory: Growing up in a small town consisting of no more than thirty villagers, John was forced into the trade of his father. Not the most noble of trades, John's father was but a simple farmer. All day spent in the fields picking wheat that would be rationed through the town.
Once John was old enough, his father took him out to the fields to work. Each day John would mindlessly plow the ground and plant each seed. Of course, he was not an only child. John had two brothers who proved time and time again to be more skilled in agriculture and showed how inadequte he was.
Year by year, John's effort on the farm fell. The plants grew in odd places and produced lower and lower quality harvest which the town soon began to complain about. His father had no choice but to take him out of the field and out of the tradition the family had held for generations. Each day, John would watch his brothers work on the farm from his house and wonder how he would fill his own time.
On one of those days his mother saw him sitting on the gravel outside the house. Running into the house she searched every room for something that might pertain his interest. Soon she approached him again but this time holding an assortment of items that she hoped would interest him.
John looked at the pile for a long time, seeing a straw doll, a wooden toy sword and even a fishing rod. But he did not take any of this. Instead his eyes focused on one item in particular, a piece of paper. Picking it up sent confusion through the mother but after a moment she offered him ink and watched as he began to write.
John had not learned a lot as a child, never being properly educated, his mother taught him how to read and write but little else. He had always shown great interest in the few books the family owned and spent many hours reading then re-reading them.
But only now had John actually realised he could create his own stories. And with the paper and ink his mother provided, John began to write. Soon, words filled the page and described everything his imagination could invent. His mother read the stories with pride but his father saw it as a waste. "How will words on paper provide for your family" he would ask.
Afterall, in such a small town the arts was almost unheard of. Books were not written in the village but rather from cities that brought them in. John knew he would eventually have to begin work on the farm again, he could not continue to write his whole life. It had been costing his mother a fortune to buy paper and ink, something which his father saw as unneccessary.
It was, of course, a tough time for small towns and villages. Many found it difficult to recover from the Veld war just decades ago. If you observed closely you could see the marks that remained from the war's assault; burned down huts that had not been cleaned up, paranoia still on the civilians' faces.
John had only heard about the war. Only being a teenager the war had started and ended before he was even born. His mother, on the other hand, had experienced it first hand. "Villages like ours.." she would tell him, "never liked the idea of conflict, but it was different with this one. We were forced to stay in our homes and remain silent while guards did sweeps of the area once or even twice a day." John noted that every time his mother would tell the story her eyes would become wide and she would shake slightly.
"It was a terrible time for everyone in the middle realm. I'm just so glad you were'nt there, if you were, I might not be able to tell you these stories today." This was usually the point in which she would stop and John would comfort her post-war nerves.
Of course, John had experienced war himself. For the years after the Veld a new war erupted. But this time between his own people. A ghastly civil war which John was unfortunate enough to be alive for. Thankfully, while many in his village were forced to become guards, he was young enough to stay free. But the village needed more and more protection with potential strikes every single day. Dozens of guards would patrol the areas around the land and never appear again.
Once John became older he started to realise the war would not end, and soon he would be forced into recruitment. His brothers and father remained safe as they provided what the town qualified as essential work, providing food in the form of their farm. However, John began to panick as with his departure from farming he would surely be forced to sign up.
On the day of his fifteenth birthday, during the end years of the civil war that had rained for almost twenty years, a guard knocked on the door. His father awnsered but John appeared next to him knowing of his fate. "I have come for your son" the guard stated to John's father who nodded and replied "my boy works on the farm with me now." John tried to hide the confusion in his face as the guard nodded understandingly and left.
Despite their issues, his father had saved him from what could have been his death. John knew he would not have survived as a guard.

A couple of years past and the civil war ended. And on one fine day John took a walk through the streets. Passing a tavern he had only entered once before, he noticed a small poster. Printed onto brown paper was the promise of a new life in bold black ink. A place supposedly unaffected by war or the negotiations between the alliance and the dusk realm. John hoped, a place that would accept his stories and allow him to continue writing his whole life.
Fearing his fathers reaction, John went straight to his mother with the news. But she did not react in the way he had hoped. Shock was first and then dissapointment for having thoughts like these. Leaving his family at such a young age was a foolish mistake. John pleaded but was met with the slam of a door and the realisation that if he wanted to escape, he would have to do it by himself.
In the early morning, just before the sun had risen fully, he snuck out. As quietly as possible John left the house with just the clothes he wore and nothing else. He had left a letter apologising to his family and hoped they would understand. The ship arrived just as people began to wake. John boarded the small ship along with a few others hoping when he saw the farm again, he would be happy.
Weeks past on the ship, with nothing to do but sit still and wait John soon became bored. In his small room in the cabins containing nothing but a chest for storing the clothes on his back and a bed, John would write. Of course, this was difficult considering he did not have paper or even ink. But after a few days on the ship John had noticed the wall was made of a soft wood which could easily be chipped into. So with a nail he had found loose on the floorboards, he began to carve a short story which could fill his time.
Eventually the ship boarded and John was finally allowed to step off the boat and see his new home. At first, John said nothing. He just stared at the view bewildered at all the sights and the people. And then he walked.

Clearing out the now deserted cabins, the captain opened the door to the next room. This one was different, the walls had words scrawled into them and wood shavings scattered the floor. The captain stepped closer to read; "Growing up in a small town consisting of no more than thirty villagers, I was forced into the trade of my father.."

RE: [New] Application - iDigGraves4u - Hutchy - 14-07-2014

Hello, iDig. I'm Hutchy and I'll be helping you through whitelisting. Sorry for the wait on your feedback.
  • Your backstory needs more relation to the setting's lore, which can be found here. You have already made start on this, but there needs to be some more relation to the lore to help us see how and why this character fits into the setting. At 17 he might have had some experience with the Civil War, if not, you must explain why this is.
  • Also, your character’s backstory must end with their arrival in the Forbidden Lands. It is implied in the story that this may be where he’s going, but it would be better if it is directly shown, whether it be when he sees the poster or at the end.

That's all for now. Bump this thread when you have finished the necessary edits and we can continue.

RE: [Pending] Application - iDigGraves4u - iDigGraves4u - 15-07-2014

Ok done with edits! According to the lore the civil war happened over 35 years before the present if "the veld" was it's nickname. So my character would have been too young to have experienced it.

Bump!

‘According to the lore the civil war happened over 35 years before the present if "the veld" was it's nickname.’ Not so, if you read further into the lore, specifically the Age of Rebirth section, you will find that the Xitians brought about a civil war between Middle Realm factions. The Veld War was fought between the Lucins and the Xitians, Mesalians weren’t really involved. That being said, you need not edit your addition about the Veld War’s effects.
