A Long Walk
#1
Because I seem to like making work for you all, have another character turning up. I'm pretty sure I got cleared to run a second character a while ago but never bothered to actually do it, though I could easily be wrong about that. I figured now was the time to change that since it doesn't feel right to me not to have this grumpy bastard around.
--------------------------------------------------------------
It was a cold evening in Nightveil when Kane came to his decision. He was directionless, never having truly found his way forward ever since he last returned to the town. Losing an arm wasn't the biggest problem, that alone he might be able to handle but the way that some of the others treated him.. Like some sort of invalid, as he saw it at least, was just too much. He desperately needed a way forward but it didn't seem like he would find it here, which made his decision easy enough. It was time to leave.
He wasn't one to sit around once a decision had been reached, he packed a few things that same day and pilfered a small number of supplies. He didn't imagine they'd be missed with one less mouth to feed. The only thing left to do was let people know, which he ended up trying to do by leaving notes but.. Kane struggled with expressing himself at the best of times. To do so through just words on a page felt impossible to him. After spending a few hours trying he just gave up and snuck away without a word.
He left by foot this time, wanting to simply get on with it and not wanting to get cooped up on a boat for days when his goal was to stretch his legs. He headed away from the town taking particular care to avoid anyone who might want to bring he journey to a swift end.

It took some getting used to, constantly roughing it and being reliant only upon himself. It had been sometime since he'd last been so throughly independant and it was only through doing this that he began to realise that he lacked a real sense of confidence in his ability to take care of himself anymore. He had ended up treating himself like a useless hinderance as much, if not more than, anyone else. As his journey wore on, he starts to regain that confidence, simply staying alive was enough evidence he wasn't useless.
A few months in and Kane had started to feel completely comfortable in his own company again, which opened the door to him starting to genuinely enjoy his travels. The constant weight of needing to find provisions and safety from the night was a challenge he understood, one he used to be good at. One he'd become good at again, even if it killed him.
He also finally had time to clear his head and devote himself back to what had always been his true passion. Violence and combat. Kane had started to realise that if he could survive on his own without an arm, to some extent at least, then why could he no longer be a warrior? It would be more difficult but that wasn't a good enough reason to just give up. He'd just need to figure it all out from scratch.

This isn't to say he spent the entire time wandering the wilderness, completely alone. He passed through towns when he had the chance. Despite his rekindled independance, Kane was still no hunter so the chance to resupply was one he took gladly. He didn't limit he purchases to just rations however, one hunter he spoke to offered to sell him a few half built traps that Kane'd merely have to set up in a good spot and let it do all the work. An idea he was happy with, since it let him go much further without having to worry about having to scavenge for roots  and berries.
His bad habits did sometimes surface in these towns though. He'd often run low on money and decide to challenge some of the locals to a sparring match with coin on the line. People tended to underestimate what a one armed man could do in a fight, but Kane had decades of experience so he often walked away from these matches with a comfortable weight in his jacket. Sometimes, he had to run away when people were less than pleased at getting trounced by a man with half as many fists.
That's not to say he won every bout he fought, there were plenty of times Kane got knocked flat and went out of pocket but in those cases he'd offer to work as unskilled labour for the village till he had enough cash to be carrying on with, people were skeptical of what help he could be but weren't going to turn the offer of an extra hand down.
After a while, Kane old blade had become well worn from constant use and abuse of it, both for it's intended purpose and as a makeshift knife and axe. It took him some time to put together the payment for it but he replaced the old falchion with a sabre. Not as well made, but workable at least. It also presented him a change of pace. Maybe a new weapon would give him some perspective on where to take his skills next?

More time passed, a year at least and Kane continued to travel with renewed confidence. He still lacked a direction to go it and a purpose to guide him but he'd found it within himself to start looking for one now. That's when he started to hear some rumours from the sailors of a few travellers trying to set up a new port town and he figured that was as good a next destination as any. He ran his fingers through the patchy beard he'd sprouted over the past year or so, having lost the ability to care enough to shave it, wondering what the place would be like. The premise of the place sounded so familiar he half expected to run into an old face.

NOTABLE CHANGES:

Appearance:
Has grown a beard and generally just looks older and carries himself with a quiet confidence he'd lacked for some time.

Personality:
So much time alone has left his even less talkative than he used to be, but significantly more thoughtful having had little else to do while he walked.
He has reinforced his calculating way of making judgements, having only needed to balance basic survival needs for over a year hasn't made him any better at taking emotional or human factors in account, leading to his making colder decisions than ever.
He's found the joy of combat again, to some extent, though now it's tempered and controlled and this has allowed him to feel more confident in himself and who he is.
