Farming
For the most part the farming for Mesalia operates in mirror to IRL. It is possible for plants to be available in Mesalia that are extinct IRL, and it’s also worth noting that a lot of plants we have today have been genetically engineered to be as large and prolific as they are. That being said, as a general rule of thumb most crops available are to be considered smaller, and yield slightly less than what we’ve come to expect in modern agriculture. Crops in our setting require a lot of upkeep compared to modern plants. There’s no real effective way to remove bugs from a crop outside of inspecting it. Keeping animals out depends on doing it yourself, planting deterrents or training animals to do it for you. Farming in setting is much more involved than what it’s come to be nowadays, and this too should be kept in mind.
Dusk (mobs) are one of the largest differences between IRL and IG. Dusks are considered a part of life and IG they can destroy crops. So, IC, occasionally dusks can stomp crops during the night, this is simply a way of life thing that can only really be addressed by constant guarding of the fields or excessive lighting. Both of which are viable but the amount of damage done to crop by clumsy dusks is usually negligible and not worth the effort.
Harvest times
Due to the nature of time in Mesalia (2-months OOC is 1-year IC) the amount of time a crop takes to grow for harvest is about 2-weeks OOC (or 3-months IC). This makes it possible to get 4 harvests every year if the climate permits it.
Crops
The types of crops available and the conditions required to grow them is the same as real life. Corn needs dryer soil than potatoes, tomatoes require posts for the vines to grow up, and so on. The crops available should be kept realistic for the climate and soil. Essentially, keep in mind a desert won't support the same crops a rain forest will. Crops usually require irrigation, and due to the ugly way Minecraft handles this we generally do not put huge ditches of water throughout fields of crops in setting, instead it’s implied it’s there on a smaller and more realistic scale.
Fallow
Just like IRL fields need time to fallow, this is a time of rest where planting doesn’t occur and the soil and dirt is given time to regain nutrients. Sometimes simple plants (like clovers) are planted to help this process but generally the soil is left alone. This is a matter of maintenance for farming especially in places where planting can happen season-round.
Gardening
This also occurs as a mirror to real life. Gardens generally replace the native soil with some sort of compost or manure. This gives the advantage of a slightly different array of plants to be grow but gardening naturally only supports small plants, generally herbs, small vegetables, pod plants, or small flowering ones. Gardening still requires maintenance, such as weeding, pest control, and watering by hand.
Settlement
ClimateSettlment has hot and humid summer seasons. Winters only get cold enough for snow maybe one day a year, if at all. This mild sort of winter doesn’t remove the ability to grow some cold hardy plants.
Soil Type
The soil is very fertile for growing along the river banks, but less so at the oceans edge.
Fallow
Fallowing is still recommended for large scale farming done away from the rivers edge. Any farm built along the river will have the river bring fresh nutrients to the fields removing the need for fallow.
Water
Irrigation is necessary due to the hot summers, but consistent rain throughout the year makes maintenance easy, and gardens and small farms not reliant upon it.
Recommended crops
The temperate seasons and rich soil gives a very wide range of crops, even some dry climate plants do well provided they are not waterlogged.
