Dragons

They arrived first to the Dusk Realm, though we never did work out why. Then the Celestial Realm found themselves in a similar situation not long after the Xitians managed to deliver their warning. We weren’t concerned at first. Our arrogance lead us to initially believe this may be justice for all the wrongs against our people.

The first dragon in our Realm erupted with tremors and a terrifying roar. The first we encountered breathed fire and death upon villages. The armies standing ready to keep the Xitians at bay at the Portal into our Realm found themselves scrambling to fight the colossal beast as it’d erupted not far from their station.

They learned quickly its scaley hide was tough, so much so that arrows and bolts from common weapons could only find purchase in the wings of the great beast. Bringing it down out of the sky was the first step, but defeating it was a harrowing event, lives were lost. It became clear no lone man or woman could ever stand against these beasts.

Though we struggled, we destroyed the beast. With it dead we resolved to stand united against the monsters and began to call them by the name the Xitians first gave to them: Dragons. As more of the dragons clawed their way from their obsidian laden nests, the strange lanky dusk creatures known as dark walkers (Endermen) were noticed to linger around these places, it was then that we learned this particular type of dusk was the only one found across all the Realms. Thankfully, the majority of the Mainlands were spared the destructive power of these creatures. As both the dusk and the dragons were only found in the areas closest to the Portals.

As more dragons rose the more we struggled to adapt to fight and survive in the face of such power. Sadly, the Dragon of the Dusk realm and that of the Celestial were not only resistant to their respective elements but they seemed to only grow stronger when it was utiliazed against them. We were lucky enough to have not one, but six different varieties of horror visited upon us. Sadly, the Forbidden Lands lived up to its namesake and saw no boundaries on where the creatures would rise from, the whole continent is at the dragons' mercy.

We will persevere in the face of these dragons just as we have against every force that has pressed us to action. But we must do so united, relying not only on ourselves, but even the Xitian and Lucin people as well.

Known Varieties of Dragons

There are six known types of dragons in the Middle Realm. The dragons are classified by the element they wield, which can be easily determined by their differences in appearance. All of the known dragons have been identified as male. These dragons range in height from 3-4 meters (9-13 feet) tall when standing on all fours. Their length varies greatly from 4 meters (9 feet) to well over 6 meters (20 feet) in length or wingspan. The creatures are all very large but not necessarily hostile. Its obvious the dragons view sheep, cows, pigs, wolves and at times people as food. While this often result in attacking settlements, towns, and cities, the dragons are beasts like any other, with survival instincts and needs. They’re fiercely territorial of their obsidian dens, and while dangerous, it doesn’t take a dragon long to learn humans are harder food to eat then their livestock.
--{ Nether Dragon }--

This Dragon’s boney exterior is resistant to cuts, slashes and arrows. The most effective weapons against it are heavy, bludgeoning, or blunt weapons to break apart the bones. The raw sinue that holds the creature together is more vulnerable to cutting weapons and arrows, but its speed makes aiming for it nearly impossible. The horns on the Nether Dragon’s head, its teeth, claws, and the blade at the end of it’s tail seem all but indestructible and razor sharp. This is one of the lightest dragons making it deceptively quick, the dusk that swarming around it make combat with it difficult and dodgy. Its Nether is deadly to Lucins. Of all the dragons this one seems inclined to hunt for sport once enraged. Though in its lust for blood it becomes easier to corner, out maneuver, and kill.

--{ Aether Dragon }--

Aether Dragons are difficult to find and unlikely to bother with people of any race. They generally avoid humans, cities and towns, and keep to remote mountains and floating islands. Aether dragons can walk and run in the air, making it capable of flight, but far more slowly than the other dragons. When fighting the Aether Dragon the energy it gives off can be empowering, but also deadly to Xitians. However, simpler animals such as hunting dogs, wild animals, and mounts, may turn against anyone unwise enough to challenge the beast after enough exposure to its Aether. While the Aether Dragon has its razor sharp claws, leathery hide, and massive horns, it seldom fights for itself. When it does, it condenses Aether into powerful balls that have a much more damaging effect then the energetic buzz it gives off naturally. This type of dragon seems to have no desire to kill or fight outside of survival. As a result, it will allow attackers to retreat so long as its done swiftly.

--{ Fire Dragon }--

The Fire Dragon has the claws, horns, leathery skin and teeth all common to most varieties of dragons. In addition to that it also has sharp webbed spines along it’s back and tail that are more than capable of skewering a man. Its wingspan is nothing shy of intimidating, but the webbing of it’s wings are the weakest section of the dragon's hide. These parts can be punctured with arrows and bolts to bring it down to the ground. But close combat may be even more dangerous as it not only spews fire from its mouth but it manipulates the burning energy into a sort of fire storm. This type of dragon is hostile, and incredibly protective of its territory. The Fire Dragon is more than willing to start forest fires and leave a path of devastation when challenged or when its territory is invaded.

--{ Air Dragon }--

The Air Dragon is formidable in a different way. Unlike most dragons it’s an ambush predator. Anything that comes into its territory is fair game. It only hunts when threatened or hungry but it will hunt anything. It moves swiftly and can be very pacient with its prey. It will use its air abilities to mask the sound of it moving right up until it’s too late. The Air Dragon also has a distinct call, which is more melodic than other dragons. It can be shot out of the sky, and when cornered without the ability to stalk and rip its prey into the air it unleashes torrents of raging wind, ranging from cutting waves to a sort of geyser that could throw a full grown man skyward.

--{ Earth Dragon }--

Earth Dragons spend the majority of their time underground, when it does venture out to hunt it will burrow a path to its prey underground so as to make a return trip easier. Earth Dragons navigates its tunnels by smell, for everyone else, the tunnels are a deadly labyrinth that the Earth Dragon can use to trap or crush unwary travelers. Earth Dragons often set traps for prey by leaving sections of soft dirt that lead into the tunnels. The Dragon tries to avoid leaving the safety of its stone shelter as much as possible. If it does venture out it still is a massive and armored beast with hard, nearly indestructible plates one its back and legs. The softest section of leather on this dragon is the only section vulnerable to harm and that’s it’s underbelly. But fighting it is compounded by its free manipulation of stone and earth, it will make earthquakes, hurl boulders and cause sinkholes to stop attacks, but unless it’s hungry it generally doesn’t kill.

--{ Water Dragon }--

Nearly as hard to find as the Aether dragon, Water Dragons spend their lives underwater in oceans and rivers feeding off of fish and marine life. They have few conflicts with humans unless its feeding area is invaded by fishermen. These types of conflicts are often resolved quickly as the Water Dragon can not only coil around small ships to crush and break them apart but it can manipulate the water to rise up and swallow the ship and crew. Anything in the water is fair game for the dragon and it will often eat fishermen to ensure they do not return. The Water Dragon usually roosts in seaside caves or underwater caves, and these caves are the few times the beast is out of the water. On land its slinky body is awkward and less than agile, but remains able to throw shards of ice and waves of water freely to defend itself.

Origins of the dragon species

This is background information, it is not relevant or known IC.
Dragons originate in the Void between Realms. The mother of all dragons has resided there for millennia, perhaps even from the time of Salazar. The dragon of the Void is referred to as the Mother dragon as that is where the egg clutches originate from. The mother dragon feasted on the energies leaked into the Void from the destruction of the Gates and the appearance of Nether Gates. So much so that she was able to send her minions between them. The minions of the mother dragon are known as darkmen or dark walkers (Endermen). The dark walkers took the dragon mother's eggs to all of the Realms, where they roosted and fed off the natural energies of their respective Realms and areas they were deposited.

The dark walkers tend to the dragon’s roost by finding or building obsidian caves for the dragon welps to live in. The welps remain safely underground for about 40 years before they reach maturity. In that time they feed off the innate energy of the area around them. Dragons reach maturity when the natural energies that make up the Realms are no longer sufficient to sustain them. It’s at this point the dragons escape their roosts and go to the surface to feed on other things, such as livestock, animals, plants, and occasionaly people.

Our world was made of three Realms. The first was the Celestial Realm. The Realm and its populace, a blue-eyed race known as Lucins, gathered their powers from the sun. The second was a Realm which countered the first, called the Dusk Realm, home to its own race of red-eyed beings named Xitians, who acquired their powers from the moon. Both races, Lucin and Xitian, possessed powers to control the elements. The Lucins could control Water, Aether, and Air; the Domain of Light, and the Xitians could control Earth, Fire, and Nether; the Domain of Shadow. We were nothing compared to the Lucins and Xitians, for we were without powers and a Domain. We resided in the third and least populated Realm: the Middle Realm, home of the Vagrants. That was the name we called ourselves in those times, for that was what we were: roamers of the Middle Realm, without permanent homes or settlements to bind our hearts or spirits...For a long time, the three Realms lived separately, remaining oblivious of each other's existence. Then, a mysterious and nameless race came forward and claimed the royal bloodline. This bloodline, composed of those more god than man, was blessed with incredible abilities which displayed power far beyond those of the Lucins and Xitians. The bloodline provided many great rulers, but the greatest was Salazar - or Emperor Salazar as he was known by his people - who had possession of a certain ability that could allow him to travel Realms. It was with these powers that he created the eminent Portals in our world which united the Realms, allowing trade routes which prospered within the empire for many centuries. The Lucins and Xitians finally discovered the existence of their neighboring Realms, and being opposites of each other, the two races naturally conflicted. They say if it were not for the laws of the empire, the countering Realms would have been at war. However, all this was unbeknown to our kind, for our people had not discovered the Portals, and thus knew nothing of the other Realms, and although the Lucins and Xitians knew of the Middle Realm, not even Salazar himself knew of us and our insignificant existence. The Lucins once told our people how Salazar made many wise decisions in his time. They told tales of how once, he and his Seven Sages, wise masters of the elements who only appeared in crisis, saved our Realm from a corrupting force: another Realm containing more Nether than the Dusk Realm, known as the Nether Realm. The tales say he restored the fragile balance between our Realm and the Nether Realm by entrusting powerful elemental Crystals to his sages, who sealed them away in the Forbidden continents of our Middle Realm. They told us other stories too, of his dedicated attention to his people and how he addressed their needs, though the Xitians thought otherwise. In those times, it was no secret that the Xitians were commonly not in favor of the empire's laws. Salazar was more god than man, but in spite of this, he too was capable of fault.
For the convenience of all and for the sake of clarity, this is a complete monster manual for the mobs seen IG. Just because we have clarification to the mobs doesn’t mean there can’t be additions later, or that this is by any means an exhaustive list of the IC wildlife. That’s not really possible to do and no one wants to read that anyway. There is also a good chance there will be additions or changes to this as time goes on.

When RPing most of the time acknowledgement of mobs spawning is up to the players, but its important we keep in mind that wandering the woods or even town at night is dangerous. Please don't ignore mobs all together, when there is clearly a large gathering, server announcements or spawners means the mobs there are intended to be IC, and need to RP’d accordingly. Here is a quick rundown of the mobs your character can and will encounter.

Common Dusk Creatures

“The IC name for mobs is “dusk creatures”, or some sort of variation like “dusk fiend”. These include zombies, skeletons, spider jockeys, spiders and cave spiders. These beings contain the Nether element and burn when exposed to sunlight due to high Aether levels in the atmosphere. Spiders [And Darkwalkers] seem to be the only exception to this, though there is no definite explanation as to why.” - Michelle

These types of dusk monsters can be found all over the world, though most cities in the mainland rarely see them they can be deadly pests in places still undeveloped or in farmlands.
The Undead
Mobs: Zombies,
IC Names: The Dead, Duskies, Walking Dead, Zombie,
Danger: High
The walking dead are common enough, and range from gooey shambling messes, to something akin to dusty old bones. The weapons they can wield or even their ability to wear armor ranges drastically. Though Minecraft by default will only ever spawn skeletons with bows, IC its possible any manner of undead could have any range of weaponry. The undead are drawn by Nether and can be thickest in areas saturated by it. No one really knows for certain what causes the undead. They are not the bodies of dead people, some folks claim that when enough Nether festers in an area at night the undead can occur. Of all the dusk monsters, they are the most common.

The undead have few vulnerable points which can make fighting them challenging. When they are in mass or armed with bows they become deadly problems. Part of the challenge when fighting the undead is that they do no recoil or feel pain. When lopping off the arm of a zombie it will do nothing to impede its attack outside of forcing it to use its other arm to claw at you. This being said, most undead aren’t terribly smart. They can easily be misled, herded or fled from as they act only on instinct.
Random Items:
This mob has never been a living person but a construct of Nether clumping. The items it may be carrying or wearing could be from other people they’ve attacked. These items range from old weapons, armor, carrots, potatoes, gold, Iron and tools.
Rotten Flesh:
Ewh, don’t eat that. Rich with Nether it’s sure to make you sick. Like it being rotten wouldn’t already see to that.

Skeletons
Mobs: Skeletons
IC Names: Skeletons, Old Bones,
Danger: High
Skeletons appear to be the animated bones of the dead, but as with zombies they were never living people. For some reason these undead most often carry bows, though can also wear any range of armor. Minecraft by default will only ever spawn skeletons with bows, IC its possible any manner of undead could have any range of weaponry. The undead are drawn by Nether and can be thickest in areas saturated by it. No one really knows for certain what causes the undead.

Skeletons have few vulnerable points which can make fighting them challenging. Skeleton accuracy may not be as dangerous as a person, but they can be deadly. While not terribly intelligent they do chase their prey and attack faster when pursued. As with zombies they do not recoil or feel pain. Most Skeletons must be killed by destroying their head, crushing their spine or dismemberment.
Bones:
“Bonemeal is basically what its name suggests: a white powder made from the grinded bones of skeletons. When mixed with water, it creates a paste which can be used in dyes and as a growth enhancer for plants and fungi. As it comes from a dusk being, bonemeal has high levels of Nether. Even though plants such as trees and crops are made of Aether, they have a defence mechanism against Nether. So, applying bonemeal to a sapling activates the tree’s defence against the Nether element and forces it to grow and become stronger so it may produce enough Aether to repel the Nether in the bonemeal. Fungi such as mushrooms work differently, however; Mushrooms themselves and other fungi in Mesalia contain a balance of Aether and Nether, so when that balance is upset by something such as Nether in bonemeal or just natural Nether clumping, giant mushrooms result.” - Michelle
Spiders are balanced like most animals, but due to the make-up of their bodies, the concentration of Nether during nighttime aggravates them, which turns them aggressive. It’s similar to an oversensitivity of some sort; Applying aether to a spider can calm and sedate, while applying Nether can irritate and enrage the spider. For this reason spiders usually only hunt at night.
Luckily these huge arachnids are solitary hunters, only gathering to mate. Usually they do not swarm in great numbers but it has been known to happen in areas with few predators and lots of prey on hand. They’re deadly hunters, known to lay in wait for unsuspecting victims. While a solitary wolf is possible to find, generally wolves hunt in packs. It’s not recommended to aggravate wolves. Pigmen are extremely dangerous as they’re possibly as smart or skilled as men and act largely as the primary foot soldiers for the Nether realm.

Bows:

Unlike most dusk monsters, spiders show a great deal of intelligence for ambush hunting their prey.
The skeleton, just like normal undead, doesn’t feel pain, and doesn’t suffer from any sort of wincing when attacked. So even if dismounted the rider will still present a very real danger to the prey.

It’s not recommended to engage without help. The mounted undead benefits from its own hardiness and the mobility of a spider. Spider riders are possibly the most dangerous of the undead as they seem to be capable of more complex reasoning and problem solving. These beasts are extraordinarily dangerous as they can spew forth projectiles that burst when hitting the ground with explosive and fiery force. Ghosts are deadly in most encounters and its not recommended to engage one, for any reason. Fleeing is almost always the best option.
Much like regular slimes, magma slimes will break apart when cut into, but can be crushed and killed once small enough. Magma slimes are incredibly hot to the touch, and will burn and seer skin with their intense heat instead of the digestive enzymes their other realm cousins possess.

Farming

For the most part the farming for Mesalia operates in mirror to IRL. It is possible for plants to be available in Mesalia that are extinct IRL, and it’s also worth noting that a lot of plants we have today have been genetically engineered to be as large and prolific as they are. That being said, as a general rule of thumb most crops available are to be considered smaller, and yield slightly less than what we’ve come to expect in modern agriculture. Crops in our setting require a lot of upkeep compared to modern plants. There’s no real effective way to remove bugs from a crop outside of inspecting it. Keeping animals out depends on doing it yourself, planting deterrents or training animals to do it for you. Farming in setting is much more involved than what it’s come to be nowadays, and this too should be kept in mind.

Dusk (mobs) are one of the largest differences between IRL and IG. Dusks are considered a part of life and IG they can destroy crops. So, IC, occasionally dusks can stomp crops during the night, this is simply a way of life thing that can only really be addressed by constant guarding of the fields or excessive lighting. Both of which are viable but the amount of damage done to crop by clumsy dusks is usually negligible and not worth the effort.

Harvest times
Due to the nature of time in Mesalia (2-months OOC is 1-year IC) the amount of time a crop takes to grow for harvest is about 2-weeks OOC (or 3-months IC). This makes it possible to get 4 harvests every year if the climate permits it.

Crops
The types of crops available and the conditions required to grow them is the same as real life. Corn needs dryer soil than potatoes, tomatoes require posts for the vines to grow up, and so on. The crops available should be kept realistic for the climate and soil. Essentially, keep in mind a desert won't support the same crops a rain forest will. Crops usually require irrigation, and due to the ugly way Minecraft handles this we generally do not put huge ditches of water throughout fields of crops in setting, instead it’s implied it’s there on a smaller and more realistic scale.

Fallow
Just like IRL fields need time to fallow, this is a time of rest where planting doesn’t occur and the soil and dirt is given time to regain nutrients. Sometimes simple plants (like clovers) are planted to help this process but generally the soil is left alone. This is a matter of maintenance for farming especially in places where planting can happen season-round.

Gardening
This also occurs as a mirror to real life. Gardens generally replace the native soil with some sort of compost or manure. This gives the advantage of a slightly different array of plants to be grow but gardening naturally only supports small plants, generally herbs, small vegetables, pod plants, or small flowering ones. Gardening still requires maintenance, such as weeding, pest control, and watering by hand.

Settlement

Climate
Settlment has hot and humid summer seasons. Winters only get cold enough for snow maybe one day a year, if at all. This mild sort of winter doesn’t remove the ability to grow some cold hardy plants.
The soil is very fertile for growing along the river banks, but less so at the oceans edge.

Fallow
Fallowing is still recommended for large scale farming done away from the rivers edge. Any farm built along the river will have the river bring fresh nutrients to the fields removing the need for fallow.

Water
Irrigation is necessary due to the hot summers, but consistent rain throughout the year makes maintenance easy, and gardens and small farms not reliant upon it.
The temperate seasons and rich soil gives a very wide range of crops, even some dry climate plants do well provided they are not waterlogged.
AUTHORS' NOTES
Please note that I'm not the only author of the lore. Feel free to add/change/suggest stuff.

On the term 'Mesalia'€.
I've noticed recently that a lot of applications and what not have referred to places as '€œMesalia'€. I realise this is probably because of the misleading name of the server, so I thought I'€™d clarify here. 'Mesalia'€ is not an IC term. It'€™s not a realm, or a land, or a continent. It's an OOC term which refers to the entire IC universe (€“as in the Celestial Realm, the Dusk Realm, the Middle Realm, the Aether, Nether and Void Realms)€“ all of these are in the world of Mesalia, a universe separate to ours. '€œMesalia'€ isn'€™t an IC word. If it was, then following that logic we'd have 'Lucia' and 'Xitia'€, which is rubbish. Our characters live in the FORBIDDEN LANDS, which is north-east of the MAIN CONTINENT, and both of these places are in the MIDDLE REALM, which is a dimension in the universe known OOCly as MESALIA.

On the Seven Sages.
There is a lot of general misconception surrounding the Seven Sages, and I hope this will clarify for you all: When I wrote of the Seven Sages, I thought '€œSage'€ was more of a position, or a title. The Seven Sages are essentially a secret (or not so secret) order founded by Salazar, which closely followed the ruling and wishes of Salazar. Even after his death, they have tried to uphold his traditions and beliefs.

What I'€™m getting at here is: the people who are the Sages aren'€™t immortal. They don't live over thousands of years. They die. They also have successors, who they train and select during their time as a Sage. But Sages don't reveal their identity as a Sage until there'€™s crisis. This is how the Sages are mentioned in the Age of Beginnings through until the Age of Rebirth. Yes, this does mean that a Sage can go through their entire life without actually revealing they are a Sage. It also means the Sages still exist today. Who they are, and where they are remains a mystery, both IC and OOC.

Generally, the Sages at the very least know the names of the other Sages, but circumstances can change things. Members of staff, if you wish to create a Sage, do tell the other staff. This way we ensure there aren'€™t two Sages for the same element. Remember, there is one sage for each element: they may be Xitian, Lucin, or half. The Seventh Sage has knowledge of all the elements, but doesn't necessarily control them all.

This way we ensure there aren'€™t two Sages for the same element. Remember, there is one sage for each element: they may be Xitian, Lucin, or half. The Seventh Sage has knowledge of all the elements, but doesn't necessarily control them all.

Luxit (Loo-sit) is a completely OOC name. Half-Lucin, half-Xitian breeds currently have no IC name. Lu-Xits are EXTREMELY rare. If the child doesn't die at birth due to the conflict of Aether and Nether within their bodies (the most likely outcome), the other two options are as follows:

Neutralised
Weaknesses and Strengths: Balanced Lu-Xits are composed of a perfect, 50-50 balance of Aether and Nether in their system. This is both their great strength and deadly weakness, as while this balance offers them great power over the elements, its a very, very fragile balance. Upsetting this balance will severely weaken the Lu-Xit, shorten their lifespan and in most cases end in their death. Aether-Nether balances in Lu-Xits can be upset simply by being around too much Aether or Nether, or by using their Aether/Nether to channel an element. Basically, if you're a balanced Lu-Xit, using your powers means you will die. These Lu-Xits also can't be healed with Aether or Nether, as this too will set off the balance unless they can get a perfectly equal 50-50 amount of Aether and Nether directed to them, which is ridiculously hard.
Half Lucin, Half Xitian: Lu-Xits

Luxit (Loo-sit) is a completely OOC name. Half-Lucin, half-Xitian breeds currently have no IC name. Lu-Xits are EXTREMELY rare. If the child doesn't die at birth due to the conflict of Aether and Nether within their bodies (the most likely outcome), the other two options are as follows:

Neutralised
Elements channelled: N/A
Other notes: This is basically a Mesalian with grey eyes. The Aether and Nether cancel each other out in the Lu-Xit and the body has neutralised.

Balanced
Elements channelled: Fire, Water, Air, Earth, Aether and Nether. Basically every element with the exception of Void.
