Terry was born roughly around 15 AV, which is about 10 years after the Purges, so I doubt he'd have first-hand experience with those things.

All the same, these two events had a huge impact on the Middle Realm, and it's likely that his parents, people in his community, or the community itself had some experience with them and if not, why not. It's still necessary that they're mentioned in the backstory whether or not the character had any actual experience with these things.

Which is exactly why he was chased out of his village. People did not take kindly to the idea of one of their own being friendly with an Xitian. 

Either way, I've said them more explicitly in the text, highlighted in green.
