Rokku, the slowness is really just a problem with Generation IV. The surfing speed is horrid, and it really is a very slow game. However, one you get past the slowness, which dissipates after the first few gyms, they're very good. If you'd like a DS based game that moves faster. Try out B/W and their sequels.
Right now I'm playing a hacked version of black/white, which increases the speed a bit, and also makes all 600+ Pokemon catchable and all can evolve without trading or other bs. It's nice so far. Character speed is upped by x4 and it removes some animations from the game, and all text boxes are instantly full and you can speed through them if you want (I don't, I read the story)
