So, yes. Pokemon now has a thread. Links made of helpfulness are provided below.

Battlan':

http://www.pokemonshowdown.com/ <-This is a free downloadable battle client

A word of warning, if you do choose to download PKMN Showdown, you should definitely read up about the different metagames on Smogon.com, linked above the link to PKMN Showdown. I'd keep away from OU, until you have a decent foot hold, becasue the OU tier revolves around three things: Weather Inducers(Politoed and Ninetales), Entry Hazards(Tentacruel, Forretress, Ferrothorn, and Skarmory), and the kingpin of OU, Scizor. Also, if you find yourself skilled in one metagame, DO NOT expect to do well in the others. They are all played very differently, so the All-Out-Attacker method that might work in one tier, might not work in another.

ROMs and Emulators (Play the games on your PC/Mac, without paying):
http://coolrom.com/ (The steps to get it set up are laid out on the site)
http://artemis251.fobby.net/downloads/emerald/ (Randomizes PKMN Emerald's wild pokemon encounters and starters. Good for shits and giggles)

I'm not the best with Emulators, and sometimes they're a bit glitchy, especially on Macs. You can't battle against other people, if you want to do that on the computer, see the "Battlan'" Heading, and download PKMN Showdown.

Also, this guy is drawing 1,000 pictures of Shuckle, he's around 150 now. It's quite entertaining:

Hey, if anyone has Pokemon Heartgold/Soulsilver for regular DS, and wants to join a Pokemon battle club, let me know. :3

I haven't played Pokemon since Ruby/Sapphire and Fire Red/Leaf Green

I tried the DS ones.. but they feel like the game moves SOOOOO much slower... I can't play it when it takes so long just to get into a battle. Its like a solid 7 seconds. Doesn't sound like a lot, but in a game with about 10,000,000 battles in it... it adds up.

I know most of the DS games are annoying, but HeartGold/SoulSilver are personally my favorite games of all time even though I'm not a big fan of some of the newer games. It incorporates some of the newer things in the game that I like, i.e. running shoes, Experience share, pokemon following you like pikachu, but also uses the older pokemon, and not the newer iffy ones.

HG/SS and D/P/Pt are the slowest games in the series, Ryu, so yes, the DS ones are annoying. However, with B/W and B2/W2, it improved a huge amount, and you can just get them on emulator, which I should prolly add to the OP.

EDIT: And when you're grinding for levels, or just don't have the time, theres always the option to turn Battle animations off. Which, personally i don't like, but it cuts down at least half the battle time.
