It was a cold, rainy day.. I was in the west fields clearing trees. Just like any other day.. I never minded the frosty nip, but now it nearly brought me to tears.. The cold would kill the flowers she planted, the last thing I had to remember my best friend by..
I keep working, ignoring the troubles.. Then the last tree in the field fell.. I could keep working. The town needed it.. But why? Did they really need some trees out of the way, some paths cleared..? I was only ever doing this lately because that idiot girl wanted me to..
As I hack the branches off of the trees to leave good usable logs, I think of the Captain.. She convinced me to try this 'social' stuff, get out there again. Talk to people.. She convinced me that not everyone around me would die.. Then she disappeared on the ship we built.
"I told you so.." I say weakly, with no one around to hear it. "I fuckin' told you so.." They all died.. My parents, my friends, my sister.. I thought it would change here. In this town. I make friends.. Then I find myself loving this stupid misguided naive girl.. Who always had the best intentions, and she has to go and kill herself..
The old man? More of the same.. He died long before he was done teaching us how to live.. Now the captain..? I just can't take this any more. I look up at where my feet have guided me while I was thinking.. I see the trade ship. It doesn't take much to buy myself a ticket out.. And that is that. I'm gone.
I'm not sure where I am going.. To look for the captain maybe. Perhaps home to Helengrad to die with the rest of my people.. Or maybe I would be some lost traveler, just hopping between ships and living life..
