Okay, lets assume we're pulling a doe or it's equivalent in small game daily. That's roughly five times less meat then the domestic hog, which means we'd need 40 days of that to supply an entire winter.

Now I know the hunters were at it for much longer then 40 days.

You don't pull in a doe daily. That doesn't happen. And unless you're hunting down 13 squirrels, or 13 rabbits a day (not going to happen) just to cover the daily need for protein, and THEN even more for excess to store...

Once again, not happening with two hunters.

And beyond that, any season that isn't winter or late fall if you're hunting and killing rabbits or hares for food carries a risk for serious illness due to rabbit fever.

Winter is safe because the first frost kills sick rabbits with the disease.
