Personality: Caine's hit rock bottom. A man who used to be full of life and happiness is now much a shell of what he used to be. After being burned emotionally he tends to want to isolate himself, and doesn't trust other people very well, after the person he trusted most destroyed him from the inside out.
He's become very jaded, seeing the world pessimistically, and has lost some of his ability for empathy. Occasionally a glimpse of who he used to be might show itself, but serious healing is needed for the wounds he harbors in his heart.
Character Traits:
Positive Traits
-Values loyalty. Loyalty and Faithfulness has always been extremely important to Caine. The value that he places on it has only grown. He believes now however, that he'll never really known if someone is truly loyal or faithful.
-Hanging on. Even underneath all of the pain and everything Caine's buried himself in, he still has the tiniest hope that his life might be pieced together again. Rarely even, someone might catch a glimpse of his old self, a small smile at a happy moment, or at a good joke.
Neutral Traits
-Reckless. What once was bravery and courage has manifested itself in a disregard for his own life. Caine doesn't believe that he has much to live for anymore. With no family, no clan, and what he thought would be a bright future with someone he loved escaping him, Caine has lost hope along the way. He might use himself for a good deed or two, but fear is nonexistent to him, for better or worse.
-Alienated. Along with his loss of hope Caine has gained a very pessimistic outlook on life. In his stay during the wild he's convinced himself that he's just a pitiful straggler, hanging off the fringes of the group with no real place or understanding in a culture he still doesn't feel a part of.
-Lack of Empathy. Caine doesn't care about himself enough to care much about most other people. He's suffering enough that he couldn't give a damn about most other's feelings or hardships.
Negative Traits
-Lack of inhibitions, interests. Caine's let himself go on a lot of things to try and distance himself from pain, or to wallow in it, as it may be. Generally he'll take anything that comes his way at the moment. Alcohol. Labor. He just doesn't care much about anything apart from a few things that he just can't let go of. Additionally.. He can't care enough to judge himself much anymore. He accepts that he could be a terrible person, the kind that he always never wanted to be, and accepts it as if he can't do much to change it.
-Pained. Caine's harboring a lot of hurt that has nowhere to go. He refuses to let go of the past, and his mind and heart lingers on it, not wanting to accept what happened. It can manifest in many ways.. The most prominent one is his persistence for wanting solitude and lashing out at those who threaten the sanctuary of isolation that he seeks.
-Can be violent. With all of the anger, sadness, and pain that Caine harbors a confrontation could quickly escalate in Caine releasing some of the maelstrom of rage and hurt on someone else. He still has the small limit in that he won't take someone else's life unless his own is being threatened. How he interprets this, and how strong that limit can hold is uncertain, even to him.
-Reading Challenged. Caine didn't ever see the point in learning to read or write, even though his mother tried very hard to teach him. What use would he have for putting words on things when he could just speak them himself? he can however, read and write a bit. Not exactly what you would call 'scholarly' however.
Back story:
-The Gladius Clan and the War of the Veld-
Back even to the beginning days of the Vagrants, the Gladius family line was one of frontiersman, who settled the snowy Yakienev mountain range for the peace it gave them from the rest of the world and their 'tribes' and wars and general problems that they tended to create. Through the generations, they seemed to distinguish themselves as men who could brave what the world had to throw at them, and the mountain villages that sprouted up near their home saw their family clan as good, strong honest people who lived in the wild because they were a part of it. They would trade any excess meat and furs they had to them to help when the winters were harsh, often times when the village had no coin to repay them with. Besides, the Gladius clan had no real need for the money: They never went anywhere. They lived in the mountain forests, and they stayed in the mountain forests. When there were too many of them to live in the same hall anymore for risk of hunting the food scarce, half of them would simply pack up to make a new hall in the mountain range. The women and even the men who married into the family from one of the villages took on the family name Gladius, as the clan members were often too proud of their heritage to give it up.
It is for this reason that the Gladius clan grew with every generation, and eventually they broke into separate clan houses -- Having such a large family tended to have it's disadvantages when everyone's last name was 'Gladius'. They began to add the name of the hall they lived in instead of the clan, and thus almost splitting into seperate clans all together.
When the Xitians invaded the land the Gladius clan was at it's height of influence, with there being more clan halls than there were villages in the mountain range. Their first mistake was trying to seize control of the villages in the mountains without establishing a foot hold in the middle realm first.
The Gladius clan were not warriors, but they were proud of who they were, and their homeland, and the news of the invasion sparked rage and fury from them. The clan was powerful enough to almost field it's own small army at this point, and they held a clan meeting with the leader from each house every season to discuss topics important to the clan.
A motion lead by a leader named Lo'stak Zakhaev was clear. They would meet the Xitians at the base of the mountain in an ambush to slaughter as many who dared try to claim them.
All thirty-two clan houses passed this motion unanimously. The Gladius clan would go to war.
The fighting was brutal. At first, the Xitians killed many of them. The Gladius clan had never really been much experienced with Xitians, and underestimated them horribly. They killed just as many however, and soon more, as they began to become more and more underhanded in their tactics; They knew the forests and the mountains FAR better than these invaders, and countless ambushes and traps taught their enemies valuable lessons that they died for every inch of ground they took. The clan halls began being built up from giant cabins, into fortresses, with tall wood palisade walls, and carpenters and engineers that had fled from the fighting were behind construction of other defenses.
After years of trying to crush a wilderness force of wild men with terrifying fear tactics and seemingly no fear themselves, Xitians were unwilling to try and breach the mountain range. They were finished with trying to fight a foe that felled their best men in droves.
That's when they began burning the mountain's forests. It was scorched earth, total war. If they could not suppress these men, they would destroy their forests and their homes, they would immolate their farmland and leave nothing behind.
Wild fires raged, leaving carnage and panic from the villages, and over a lengthy campaign, the clans were finally defeated. They were made drifters and wanderers, who mourned the destruction of their homeland. It was far too late by the time the Lucins came to liberate the lands. The forests were dead, and vacant. The villages were deserted. The Xitians left nothing of their clan halls behind.
The clan kept their names though, and their history alive, and their pride and indignation. Most are quite racist towards Xitians, being taught from birth to forever remember "The Leaf burner's crime".
Most of the clan participated in the War of the Veld, as scouts, warriors and archers. Some of them even went on to be great leaders in the war. Men of action. They all saw it not as a war, but more of an execution, consequence from a crime. Their mentality grim, their determination unbreakable, having been robbed of their homeland and their family members.
After the war, the clan remained broken. They had no where left to go. They were too heart broken to rebuild. Most of the houses integrated into other kingdoms, where the clan's wide variety of skills and their hardy, tough nature made them valuable assets.
-The Tairokov Family, and Caine's Life-
The Tairokov House used to live near the summit of the northern most mountain. They were a relatively young house, and thus was smaller than other houses. The head of the house was named Ishmael Tairokov, and he was a fiery red-headed man with a thick beard and a thicker chest. The man was built like a bull, and he had the gentleness of a lamb for his kin. He was a quiet and a strong leader, able to make hard decisions for the house and to rally them in hard times.
His wife was named Nina Tairokov, and she was a slight woman from a nearby village, who was a healer of the nearby village before marrying him and joining the clan. She was just as strong as her husband, despite her slender frame, and often tended to be just as much of a leader as him, and was just as respected and perhaps a bit more feared. She always liked to say that 'Men may kill a man for a crime, but they don't have it in them to give true justice'.
Her husband's siblings, their families, and their cousin's familys made up the hold's inhabitants, and even with all the children always darting around and the older ones relegated to chores, she yearned for a child of her own.
It seemed like it wasn't to be, however. She had two miscarriages, and it seemed like the gods had found her unfit.. After the war when she and Ishmael decided to resettle, to try again, in the forests to the north, Ishmael convinced her to try one last time, and that time she was blessed with her only son: Caine.
Through out his childhood he was raised to learn all of the things the clan used to expect from children- He was to learn to hunt, fish, take care of the house, and generally do everything that needed to be done around the homestead for the family's need. They were a very self-sustaining people. They built their own homes, their barns, fences, they gathered food, they cooked, they cleaned, they made their own clothes, they were ultimately responsible for everything needed in their life. There was no one to turn to except family, and themselves.
He was held to high expectations by his parents, who loved him deeply and were nurturing and kind, but disciplined him well with a firm hand. When he was a bit older, and the civil wars began to shake the land, his parents began talk of perhaps settling in the forbidden lands -- They were not afraid of anything that could be waiting on the other side, and they remembered what the last war had wrought upon their families, and were eager to avoid it happening to their son.
In the end though, they found there was little they could do to stop it from happening. Kingdoms were in turmoil, violence was everywhere, and bandits were commonly taking advantage of the time of trouble.
By the time he was eighteen they finally had enough coin to pay for a passage to the forbidden lands... A passage for one. He was horribly saddened to be sent off, but he went, with perhaps the dream of coming back one day to bring them back with him.
The voyage was long, and difficult, fraught with trouble in the passing seas, and on top of it all, as a part of the deal Caine had to pull his own weight on the ship. He hated sailing, he learned then. He got seasick easily, and the entire journey was a hell all by itself.
He was glad to have finally went ashore, but was fearful of the journey ahead. His parents had told him that they had word that there were groups who had traveled to the Forbidden Lands before, and they were likely to have towns there, he only had to reach them.
But all Caine found was abandoned ruins and outpost that hadn't seen occupants for... He didn't know how long... Living off of whatever he could hunt and scavenge from the wild, like his ancestors did before him, he eventually came to realize there was a path! A trail of beacons that might lead to something, to hopefully, his new home. And as he came along it he began to see signs that perhaps, he was following someone. Signs of snuffed camp fires, and old discarded notes... He followed these signs and the beacons, into the desert with the hopes of finally meeting another person, for the first time in months. He was hopeful beyond measure...
