Slits in the metal allow for breathing and speaking, while the band protects the neck.I'm not sure I understand just what your describing here, whatever it is sounds large, and cumbersome to wear while working... if its possible to turn ones head at all with a mask that sits on the shoulder. I'm sorry to keep harping on this detail but I'm just having trouble visualizing it.
