Personality:
Mathias is a flirtatious and confident man on the outside, he is the man people talk about when they say “that is how the west was won”, he is bold, crass, and always ready for work. But there is something else underneath that he doesn't tend to show. Beneath his flirting, he is uninterested and apathetic. Beneath his confidence, he is quiet and nearly reclusive. Beneath his bold and crass behavior, he is a work-a-holic more interested in steel and forge fire then skirts and kisses. And that is just how he is.

Traits:
Confident and Bold
Crass and Flirty, but with an empty meaninglessness.
Quiet and Relaxed, often misunderstood as laziness.
Natural Leader, gets things done under pressure.
Compartmentalist, locks down emotions and ignores feelings.
Often struck with Nightmares and Stress from the past.

Story:
Concerning Smithing:
Mathias has been smithing from an exceptionally young age, and he never stopped. That's nineteen years of skill right there, so it is no wonder he's gotten good at it. But the question still of course comes up; what can he smith?

He is primarily a blade smith, making swords for the guard and picks for the miners in town. He makes a few other tools as well, but with the civil wars a sword was always the most in demand item. He works with a variety of steels and composite metals, but has little to no experience with cast iron or bronze, as these aren't the preferred methods for making a blade. Mathias' specialty is carbon steel, but it is an expensive and time consuming make, so he most often works with basic crucible steels.

On method, Mathias is skilled in his work and for much of his life had ample material to work with. He most often prefers to differentially temper his blades for durability, but he has also learned to differentially quench the blades. During the large loss of miners during the civil wars less quality ore was brought up, which caused Mathias to require learning new methods like differentially forging and folding steel from his mother, who came from a much poorer place then Valifren. He is well versed with the methods, but prefers greatly to start with good steel and use tempering over folding.

His only practice with precious metal and precious metal alloys would be gold and electrum coins and trimmings. He is no jeweler.

Relations:
Vaul:
Good man, it seems. Useful, hunter. Doesn't respect his leaders, possibly undisciplined? Either way, strong, evidently hard worker. Should talk more maybe...

Minwu:
Useful, talks a lot. Chef or whatever. Polite.

Little Girl (Estelle):
First xitian I've ever seen. Cute, Quiet, Harmless.

Cook Woman:
Useful, Grumpy, always has a complaint. Interesting to listen to her go on and on. Little bit confusing, did she expect me to swoon and beg her to come with me?

Verdon:
Makes explosives. Says they can help mining. Sounds like a good deal to me. Interesting enough.

Mercedes:
Calm, quiet, but interesting. Beautiful, Useful, seems to work hard. Not hard to talk to at all. We share a bed, but not like that. We... Started courting, I think. We exchange kisses and spend a lot of time together. I don't know what I'm doing... Fuck, I just hope this doesn't turn out like Sabrina.. I don't want to feel numb to everything again, leave another good woman behind..

Elizabeth:
Only a little useful, not worth it. The woman is drop dead gorgeous, maybe the sexiest lass I've seen, and it doesn't help that she practically runs around naked, but I wouldn't hit that with a ten foot pole. She's batshit fucking insane through and through. She's Mercedes' best friend though, so I deal with her... Seriously though, how does ANYONE keep eye contact with this woman???

Hi, Tig. Sorry for the wait; a few things needed double-checking, and no one was available.

1. You need more detail in the backstory overall, particularly with the timeline. It’s difficult to tell how old Mathias was when events occurred, which makes it difficult to see the justification with your character’s skills (i.e. when he started learning things, when his responsibilities grew). Please elaborate/revise, and see point three for more.
2.There was never any shortage of discipline … He grew respectful and calm.” The crassness and flirtatiousness that Mathias develops later seems to contradict this. Contradiction is fine; people are contradictory, but his personality description should explain this further. Why does this contradiction exist? Please revise/elaborate.

3. Skill issues - see point one for related information:
  • a) Northern Language ( If there is one or ever is one )” We’re not accepting any more characters who can speak Northern until there’s a lore for it. If you, or someone else gets a lore approved for it later, you can apply for a skill change. But until then, please remove this.
b)Competent Fighting, with Longsword and Forge Hammer” This should be two skills, because the weapons and their combat styles aren’t similar enough. Furthermore, the forge hammer combat seems unjustified by Mathias’ backstory; a guard training with a sword is believable, but a forge hammer isn’t. Please revise.
c)Apprentice Mining ( Iron & Coal only )” Is this just surface mining? Does the skill involve stone mining? Building supports? Please clarify/elaborate with more detail.
d)Lucin Language ( Learned to better work with the large number of lucins in Winterstone... And flirt. )” This requires some kind of rank indication, because so far it can only be assumed that no rank means that he’s fluent. The reasoning provided doesn’t justify fluent Lucin; at the very most, I’d allow Lucin at a more basic, conversational level. Please provide a skill rank and revise.

4. Lore issues:
  • a) There’s no mention of the Dusk Portal’s re-opening, which was introduced in the new lore update. Mathias and Winterstone might have not heard about it in its earlier stages, but it’s been open for about a year and a half now (opened in 35AV, it’s now halfway through 36AV). Plus, it’s likely he would’ve heard about it from the riders. Please revise to incorporate this information.
b)There were plenty of lucins in Winterstone, not a garrison but enough to call on the protection of the celestial kingdom whenever it was needed, or so everyone always assumed.” I understand that this fails later, which makes sense. However the average Lucin, regardless of social class, would not expect the Celestial Kingdom to protect a Middle Realm settlement. Thus, this as the town’s premeditated, go-to option would be unrealistic. Please revise with this information in mind.

There’s another point that’s in your PM inbox; please also address that when you go to revise. That’s all, for now. Good luck.

Edited. Updated skills & knowledge, went and added age references to the backstory and more references to his personality and influence. Threw in a a mention of the dusk portal and it's impact, removed the reliance on the Celestial Kingdom.

Your revisions pass so far. However, Zark and I were discussing the inclusion of Dranscey in Mathias’s backstory. We decided that Dranscey needs a lore approved before you involve it in any future backstories, including Mathias’s. Please submit a lore proposal for Dranscey, or revise your application accordingly. That’s all, for now. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them. Good luck.
