Backstory:
Hector was born into a family of three, consisting of him mother, father and older brother. His mother was a herbalist and Hector would spend a lot of time with her as he grew up. His father however was a librarian and Hector would learn to read at a young age but would never quite get the hang of writing. His brother was a very well known hunter about the village and despite his tough exterior had a soft spot for his little brother and would often play with or make time to help him.
After a rather unexciting childhood where his day to day life was to watch his mother work and have her include him in some of the more simple tasks such as picking herbs and grinding them up and having his father help him pick out books then mutter in annoyance at his inability to write. Along with some time spent with his older brother on some of his less dangerous hunting expeditions he began to be taught by his family. He enjoyed this time a lot, he loved his family and always felt safe about them.
Presuming he would take after his brother or father the family had most of Hector’s time taken up with learning how to handle a bow with his brother and his father increased his efforts to his efforts to get Hector writing, however after a few months of this his father gave up entirely. The remainder of his time was spent with his mother, as Hector was not a very social person to start with. He learnt as much as he could from her, listening with rapt attention and an unending series of questions on everything to do with plants.
In between these lessons he would occasionally talk to the other children but more often than not, he would be looking at plants and whenever a Lucin came into the village he would watch them with a fascination any child would have with something that appeared to be plucked from flights of fancy.
Around the time that Hector could handle a bow proficiently and land a good number of shots at an average range, his brother took Hector on a hunting trip. This went especially well, as they caught a deer, they would have caught two if Hector had been able to shoot the deer but he was unable to. He and his brother went on a number of trips after this but it always ended the same, Hector simply couldn’t end the life of the animals he hunted.
This changed him, he went from entertaining thoughts and fantasy of being a world renowned hunter, to just being without and ambition. This was because, he didn't know what else there was to be. If he wasn't a hunter, in his mind, he wasn't anything.
When Hector’s family realized this, his life changed drastically. As they, seeing he had little to offer in the hunting side of things, went about trying to find other tasks for him to do. Very few of these tasks interested Hector in any way, which only reinforced his feeling of uselessness. That was until they set him up as the stable boy at the age of twelve tending to a number of horses that their inn kept for those travelers passing through the village.
Hector took to this like a fish to water, truly caring for the animals. He was compelled to simply care for the animal like it was a brother or sister, he wasn't sure why but one thing had become clear, he had found, in his mind, his purpose.
However, shortly after this Hector’s village was caught up in the civil war and most of the village’s men joined up to fight hoping for fame and glory. This left the village with a shortage of hunters and many mouths to feed. This was one reason for Hector’s departure from his home. Another was that his parent’s were getting older, his mother was losing her memory and his father had become quite and reserved, Hector didn’t feel like these were still his parents and now his brother had left he was starting to feel lonely.
In spite of all of this, the biggest reason for Hector to leave was that one night, while he was sleeping a party of soldiers entered his village and began to burn the houses and loot all that was there.
As he was awoken by the shouting and the screams, he knew what he had to do. He ran about his abode picking up a few items of importance, his herb pouches, some rations and a cloak that was slightly too big for him, he stole away into the night but not before a sight too horrible for description appeared in his sight. One of the soldiers had his father crumpled before him moaning in pain, his mother next to him, her still form chilling him to the bone. The soldier raised his blade and Hector turned and ran.
After a long time, he stumbled upon a large forest. Without hesitation he entered the forest and upon finding a clearing he decided to stop here for a while. This led to him finding a good spot to build a small shack; in between the roots of some of the larger trees. He found some sticks on the ground and put them on top of some of the branches creating a sort of roof and he covered that in leaves.
That night was certainly changing for him. This was the spark that led him into what he is today, he felt at home in that forest. So he stayed.
It was in this forest that he spent the rest of his life up to this point. He very slowly got over the memory of his parents, but he still fell to depression sometimes. He began to protect the trees, trying to stop damage done to them. Then he moved onto plants in general and then onto animals. He found that if he looked around enough he was able to gather enough food to sustain him and so he decided never to hunt and eat only what nature gave him. It was this idea that slowly changed him from somebody who respected nature into somebody on the verge of worshiping it. He would say prayers to the land , treating it as some kind of deity and his nature would change to something almost druidic. He experimented with different herbs and plants finding some that helped trees recover from scrapes, such as plastering the ‘gash’ in sap and some that were good for the health of a person. He was not afraid to test things on himself, but he often did it on animals that were wounded so badly that they would be unable to recover. This meant he did not feel so bad if it turned out to be a toxin of some sort. He committed many of these remedies to memory and began to rely on them. His herb pouches quickly became full with sorted reagents.
In the rest of him time he would be studying the animals of the forest. At first they were incredibly shy of him and ran at any opportunity but eventually he befriended some. He managed to tame a deer, which he liked to play with and he also tended to any wounded animal he found, those that he could at least.
This left him with a good amount of time, so he entertained himself by thinking about like the universe and everything, this eventually fell into habit and he would start to drift off in the middle of things before bringing himself back to reality. Some of this time was used to evaluate his own person, he accepted what he was but he wanted to be better. He began to make efforts to be more polite to the occasional hunting party that came through the area and he began actively search the surrounding area of the forest for wounded. No longer did he help only the animals but the occasional human too.
It was this lifestyle that led to his skill at animal husbandry and herbalism. He carved his tools out of fallen trees and sticks. He first he wasn’t sure how but he began to scrape at the with the sharper rocks he found, eventually trying rocks and sticks together with some of the more rope-like plants. He existed like this from the age of sixteen to the age of twenty six, he was kept alive by wit, curiosity and his love for nature.
However because of this isolation he knows little of social behavior and is rather basic language wise. He can’t understand anything too complex in description simply because of his limited vocabulary. Despite that, he will still try and to be helpful to the land and in turn the people who live on in it. He also resolved to be more social with people if he ever left the forest.
He got to the Forbidden Lands because the forest where he lived was beginning to become more dangerous, previously he escaped from bears and other predators because they were simply too few in number to have a large chance of finding him. This had changed though and Hector finally became too uncomfortable to stay in the forest, so he filled his herb pouches and slid his flint knife into the pocket of a now tattered cloak and set out to find a path to somewhere better, finally ending up in the Forbidden Lands. He went by boat, landing on the shores and begging to wander through the wilderness of this new land, came upon a set of beacons which he followed out of sheer curiosity.
Personality:
Hector's greatest defining feature is his respect and near worship of the land, he spent ten years living in a forest and tending to it's sick and wounded. This love of nature may however sometime get the better of him in one of his more out of character outbursts at someone, or something that has clearly been disrespectful to nature.
His life has also left him rather behind when it comes to social matters, despite his resolutions to be more social. This sometimes leads to him missing the point of certain gestures and entire statements when they are far too over complex for his vocabulary.
His time in the forest has had many impacts of him, one being that he very rarely spoke to himself in the forest and kept his thoughts inside. He doesn't see a need to talk when alone and this has become almost habit and he talks far less than he did as a child.
Another impact, is that he is a patient man. You have to be in the forest, nature won't bend to you so you have to bend to nature. That is his philosophy which has led to him becoming used to waiting long periods of time.
Besides that, he is a kind man which stems from his peacefulness. He models himself almost after nature's example and if nature is very peaceful, then he will be too. He is kind because he sees no reason not to be, in his mind why not help others when your other choices are simply not as good. His justification for this, is 'why start a fight when you van help someone in need?'.
Inside of him, there are the memories of his youth nibbling at him and sometimes they overtake him. Sending him into a short bout of depression, maybe one or two days. Never anything major and hardly common but it does happen to him when something happens to give him a prompt to do so.
He prefers being outside to indoors, which is simply from his habit over the last ten years. He also has an intense curiosity for many things, however for him, most of those things are based on nature.
The final point of his personality, is that he strongly dislikes violence. He is an advocate of the peaceful solutions to problems, he tries to diffuse arguments, even if he is bad at it. He holds in a firm belief that violence is only detrimental to everything.
