I hate to be that one terrible fun-killer of long discussions, this one's going well too, but as you might realize if you think about it, this thread has gone a tiny tad off topic now.

Well, with marriages of older times, certain factors applied heavily.
With the black death (Bubonic plague,) humanity in western and in some parts, eastern Europe was devastated. Homosexuals cannot reproduce, hence why it was shunned. Anyways, that's the tinfoil hat theory in this ring.
However, marriage has predated most religions. I would see the Romans and Greeks as a prime example, as they endorsed and allowed such things. (IMO, a very open minded path.) In Mesalia, there is no right or wrong way to do such things. There are several if not thousands of ways to roleplay religion.
Mesalians are pagan, and then you've got the Lucin and Xitian churches. It's rather simple. With paganism, and any religion their may be minor transgressions or pathways.
See Christianity, and "Baptist" as the sub-religion inside that. With Paganism it could vary from blood exchange, to bracelets, to rings. It could be an informal or formal agreement as well. It could be in private in a grove in the woods or in some elaborate temple.
This is where you difine your character and the other players character involved. Allow their beliefs and cultures, to influence the exchange. For instance, Solen simply used a ring to propose to Ezri, (Disaster ensued for him, he's so lazy,) and it was denied by her.
Now, my other characters such as Varric or Holland (Both terrible IMO,) Varric would have used a silver band bracelet and a cross necklace like his homeland for engagement, and then add a golden bracelet to show the marriage complete. As for Holland, just the blood exchange in-front of an elaborate speech provided by a Mesalia preacher.
In the end, you must answer this question. I highly suggest you Google marriage traditions. This could range from European, Scandinavian, all the way to Nordic, etc, etc. Just research the older and more modern practices.
