The Arrival of Daniel
#1
The Arrival of Daniel.
Or how he traveled to the Forbidden Lands.

Note: I wrote this here because I was not sure where to exactly put this little post. It's supposed to be a background story for how my character got into Ravenna, or how he traveled there for a total of 1 year.

The sail from the middle-lands took a few months, a few months, across a constantly wobbling sea. More than enough to make any "landlubber" sick for both home and steady ground. Daniel didn't exactly enjoy the ride, as apart from the few occasional views from the deck, the constant motion of the boat reminded him of how much he hated sailing. The crew and the passengers of the ship did not help him at all either, most of them too busy with themselves and their own business to mind poor Daniel.

Even though most of them seemed like decent folk, Daniel could not shake off a feeling that something was amiss. A lot of them had weapons: swords, scimitars and clubs strapped to their belts, as if they were prepared for some sort of conflict. And they had the most peculiar assortment of clothing too, he thought. Then again, he wasn't exactly the most common looking person either, with his colorful clothing made of cotton. There were both men and women, of all races, shapes and sizes there, but they all seemed somehow... familiar with each other. They were all pretty heavy drinkers too, many of them keeping some sort of bottle of smelly alcohol with them at all times. They seemed friendly enough though, so Daniel did not think much of them and simply stayed quiet during their sail together.

As the Forbidden Lands slowly creeped up from the horizon, a small far northern port town appeared. This was their destination, but the captain did not speak the name of the port much, apart from the occasional times when he called it "a safe place". This was enough to keep Daniel content and not ask further questions during most of the sail. However, things came to a close as they finally arrived at the docks and the crew members began to quickly unload their cargo onto dry land. Then when it was finally the time for everyone to leave, the captain personally escorted Daniel outside the ship personally, which seemed a little strange to him at the time.

The town appeared far less habitable than Daniel initially imagined and hoped, as most of the buildings were either shacks, corroded by sea water or simply in bad shape. Most of the people in the town were either drunk, chatting up women or running around like maniacs in the middle of the day. There were inns, bars and alcohol stores, but nothing apart from the said few shacks that could make a home. He knew could not stay in this place, he thought, he would rather live on the forsaken wobbling ship than stay here. He tried speaking to the captain in one of the nearby bars, but once he finished his pleading sentence the obviously drunk captain simply laughed in his face. "Ye should be glad ye ain't dead, shrimp!" He said, cackling with laughter along with his crew, as they all drank and smoked together by the table.

With that, he wandered about the town for some time, and tried to look for some other way of getting out. He had no coin left after his journey, which meant he could not afford to stay there even if he wanted to. He needed to get out soon. Gladly, he didn't have to wait for long as he found a caravan willing to travel down south of the lands. The folk were friendly and understood Daniels situation, as they too originally arrived here with hopes to start a new life. It was also then that Daniel was explained exactly what kind of people he has been traveling with, and why exactly he was lucky to be alive. Pirates, bloodthirsty, rowdy, chaotic... Pirates, he thought as he remembered all of the things he observed while on the ship and in the "shady" port town.

And so he traveled with them for another few months, but this time in a much more comfortable manner. The folk knew how to hunt, how to get wood for the fireplace and even had a spare bed for him to sleep in. They sang and shared stories of their families with him, mostly stuff you would expect from peasants and commoners, but they were entertaining enough. He liked them, as he shared a few stories of his own with them, and often helped with any repairs of the caravan. He proved to be useful more than once during their travel because of that.

The folk pleaded for Daniel to stay once they stopped and settled down, but as much as he liked them, he could not live in the forest with them. He could not live in the woods, with the caravan as his home forever. He wanted to find a town, a civilized place, where he could let his ambition grow and blossom. They knew they could not keep him forever either.

As a farewell gift, the folk gave him a walking stick, to remind him of his travel with them and help him on his journey. He was also given a few months’ worth of rations, consisting of mostly salted deer, bread, and a water skin. They showed him a direction in which he could go, as well as a safer path to take during his trek.

"Follow the coast down the south, we don't know these lands much, but maybe you will find what you are looking for. Head West." They said, as Daniel followed their suggestions closely. He was used to taking pleasure walks across the nearby forests of the monastery, but he never had to navigate, he never had to travel such long distances. This proved to be quite difficult, as often the deer trails twisted and turned, which often confused him and caused him to lose his way. He slept by lake shores, a safer place to sleep than somewhere in the forest, he thought. It was late summer when he traveled on foot, so luckily he didn't exactly need much of extra coverage to keep himself warm at night.

The food lasted him for quite some time, as he carefully rationed it and often picked various berries and fruits from the lush forests of the north, but even that eventually started to run out. As he traveled south, he found less and less edible fruits, and his rations began to disappear. He often walked without a breakfast, or lunch, or even dinner, eating only when he started a fire by the sea. He was slowly starving, as his weight dropped by a little more than a quarter during that time. His round, healthy belly simply disappeared. He knew he would not last for long, not without much more food to keep him going. The nights became colder, as his clothes also began to deteriorate, as sleeping against the sharp stones and sands tore a few holes in his cotton garment. Even his water-skin of all things eventually decided to gain a few extra holes in it, rendering it completely useless.

One night however, while walking a few extra hours instead of sleeping, he noticed something in the distance. Walls of what appeared to be a city rose in the distance ahead of him, the grey walls stood valiantly as Daniel almost ran to finally meet civilization. He huffed and puffed through exhaustion, but all was in vain, as the grand gates of the grand city were locked shut. There were no signs of life to be seen from the outside. So much for grand civilization, if there are no people to let you in. He cursed his luck, after shouting at the top of his lungs a few times. Grand castles like that don't just spawn by themselves in the middle of the forest, he thought, there has to be some sort of settlement connected to it.

And so he circled the city, as he kept to the river and the grand walls of the place. The walk was hard, there were many hills and bumps on the road he had to climb up and down, not to mention the small shallow water he had to cross. He will either find this accursed settlement, or die because of the cold, he thought angrily. There was a reason why he normally stuck to the coast, apart from keeping semi-warm in the night and avoiding trees. Beaches were almost devoid of any kind of Dusk monster, whether Daniel knew it at the time or not. However, the woods, especially these ones, were almost always filled by all kinds of monstrosities. Daniel had to run, on many occasions, during his trek around the woods. The adrenaline meant he pushed himself to the limit even further.

By the time he reached the bridge of Ravenna Port, he was very exhausted. He barely pushed one leg in front of the other, as he climbed the steps and began calling out "Hello..?". His voice was weak, as was his worn-out body. This was his last straw, his last few steps before he would collapse and give up, he thought.

It's either this, or I will die on this forsaken bridge.

Time it took him to Travel in Total: 1 Year.

He sailed up until he was just over 20, plus or minus a few days.

He the spent the next 7 months traveling with the "The Folk" and 5 walking by the coast down South.

He arrives in the village of Ravenna when he is a little over 21 years old.

Direction from which he traveled from: North-East

Side-Effects of the Travel: When he reaches the village he will be Starved, Dehydrated, Exhausted and Cold. It would take a little over a week IC worth of good food, water and sleep to get him back on his feet.

He will have blisters and cuts on his feet, which would take at least a few days to heal.

His clothes (including his well-made shoes) will be ruined, he will have no food or a water skin.

He also didn't speak at all for a few months, which could be hard to for him to do at first.

Additional notes: Really Dislikes Pirates.

Gear brought in with him apart from his clothes: An oaken, sturdy-looking walking stick.

Hey Epsy!

I'll help you get this hammered out so we can get danny-boy into the settings. Few things stick out as issues but luckily they're easy to fix

Quote:... They showed him the direction of one of the bigger, more civilized, port towns to the south and simply let him go.

"Follow the coast down the south, until you reach the town of Auria. Stick to the beach."
The new setting is far to the north of Auria, but in this instance I think you might have meant Ravenna, if that is the case, she has been lost for a long time so the caravan wouldn't likely know about Ravenna being to the south. Ravenna does not sit on the coast, but to the east of the sea on a large river. From the north, Ravenna wouldn't appear like a mere village. Poor Danny wont be able to find a way in to the city until he circles around to the southern shore which is where the port and bridge is.

Otherwise you're looking good. Fix that up and we'll have you in, in no time.
