Age: 26 years old [March-April]
Gender: Female
Birthday: 31st of the first season
Race: Mesalian
Appearance:
Like her mother, Orvich has Heterochromia, this means that each of her eyes are a different color. One is a muddy brown and the other hazel. Her hair is a strawberry blonde and she stands at a staggering 6’ 5” (About 195 cm). She’s got a powerful build, and generally lacks feminine curves. She carries herself stiffly, as if incapable of a slouch.
Dress:
Orvich’s build made finding clothing near impossible for her. She resigned herself to men's tunics and simple slacks, usually with heavy leather boots and gloves. A leather bag for her equipment and a tool belt that could hold anything from her rune tools to her mace.
That’s when she’s not wearing her armor. As a royal ward Orvich was gifted with a fitted set of plate armor just for her. While it is the most unfeminine bit of steel to be honed into armor, it is hers. After the sacking of Vert she lost the matching mace and the once flawless armor now has ugly and cheap repairs in it.
Personality:
Orvich’s strongest trait is probably her sense of honor and her adherence to it. She firmly believes it’s the obligation of the strong to not only set an example for others, but for her every action to be tempered by reason and patience. She’s never struck anyone in anger, and likely never will. Being human it is possible to make her angry, but she dutifully maintains her control and is near incapable of besmirching her honor. Especially now that it’s all that’s left to her.
While she may be capable of a great deal of harm, in truth her honor serves her gentle nature. Orvich, given a choice, never would of taken up a weapon. She certainly never would have killed a soul. Sadly her family and the war gave her no choice in the matter. So harm she did, though often time’s she required time to come to terms with the violence afterwards. Usually she had to face these things alone with quiet reflection on the necessities of war and survival. Though it never got any easier for her to accept she'd ended other's lives with nothing shy of brutality.
Orvich is staunchly loyal and devoted to service, she will follow an order without fail until she either completes the task laid before her or her orders change. To her law is absolute, there is no gray area in morals or in her duty. Because most people are prone to error, and she's been greatly betrayed in the past, Orvich has a hard time getting close to people. Sometimes she struggles to relate to those who haven't experienced war, other-times she intentionally keeps a distance from people and becomes easily uncomfortable discussing her personal life. That being said, Orvich can be judgmental and a painfully stubborn. She is not often swayed and never acts against what she believes the letter of the law to be.
Outside of that she’s a clever woman, if not naive, with a good mind for mathematics and engineering. She starves for intellectual stimulus and when guarding will often spend her time observing things carefully to determine escape routes, potential dangers, and decorating changes she’d make. Though naturally curious, she’s very aware of her status and doesn't often speak more than absolutely necessary, but what she does say is usually very concise.
At her heart, Orvich is capable of a great deal of love and loyalty. Though both are hard for her to give to others. She desires deeply to be more feminine, and maybe find a family of her own. But her clumsy nature and imposing build has resulted in her quietly resigning herself to her place as a giant of steel with a soft heart hidden at her core.
Skills:
Macemenship - Competent
Much of Orvich’s young adult life was spent training with the mace. And the result is a powerful and keen skill with the deadly weapon. She is not the swiftest fighter but she is devastatingly effective.
Rune Engineering - Competent
With time and patience she's managed to continue to study rune engineering, her ability is slowly started to catch up with all that she'd studied. She can make runic devices reliably and runic machines doubly so.
Culinary - Apprentice
She has always enjoyed cooking but never did so for anyone other than herself and is completely unaware that she’s actually pretty good at it. She doesn't know anything about baking.
Horse Riding - Novice
She learned to ride horse so as to escort the princess outside the city walls. While she never had much opportunity for it, she did always enjoy the opportunity to ride.
Backstory
Orvich Mote the first was commander of the king’s cavalry, this position had rose the humble soldier and his wife Corra nearly to the courts of nobility. Orvich was known largely for his loyalty and code of honor. He was not unlike the knights but without the lordship or bloodlines for such a claim. But that stopped him none from holding serving the king above all else.
Just before civil war broke out between the kingdom they lived in, Rointhia, and it’s neighbors; Orvichs wife became fat with child. The Motes wanted a boy, Corra and her husband talked at length over what a strong boy they’d have. One that would become a soldier, and serve their king with honor and unquestioning loyalty, one that would carry his fathers name with pride. Sadly, Corra died giving birth to a girl.
Orvich the First, full of grief over the loss of his beloved and beautiful wife decided that he would raise his daughter and still fulfill all the plans he’d made with her mother. Regardless of the fact the child was a girl. So she was named after her father, and every intention was made to raise her as a soldier.
The kingdom they lived in was far to the south of the gates to other realms, there it sat in a vast and dark swamp called Esterbarrow. Rointhia had been an old kingdom and much more vast and powerful before the civil wars started, but the ambitious King Harnell had over reached early in the war and slowly but surely, the borders of his once great kingdom receded back to a scant few towns, and the capital city. The king’s home, Vertcastle, was situated at the center of the captial. The small city was named for it’s castle, and simply called Vert.
Orvich the second, spent relatively little time with her father growing up. The king’s war kept him busy with no time for raising the child. Not that Orvich didn’t love him all the same, he was after all her father, and the only family she had. She wanted nothing more than to make him proud, and he wanted nothing more than to see her become a soldier. As a child, Orvich was always tall for her age, lanky, and worst of all clumsy. Though her father could afford fine dishes and wares, they had to keep wooden ones around because Orvich had broken nearly every dish in the house as she learned to cook. Thankfully, her keen mind well suited for problem solving, and up until she was ten she excelled in her studies of reading, writing and math. In her studies she learned about rune technology, but her father wouldn’t grant her an instructor.
“It’s not something fitting for a soldier.” He’d tell her.
At ten it became time for her to find a weapon for learning to fight with, Orvich and her instructors all came to the same conclusion. Orvich was too clumsy to rely on speed or finesse in battle. So she learned mace. While a weapon of skill, to be certain, it was not a weapon of grace. She applied herself to this just as she had her studying and started to grow broad and powerful as she developed in her teens. Her size, unfeminine build and perhaps her skill, spurred taunting from the boys she trained with. It was as a child she was first called ‘Ogre’, a cruel nickname she could never shake.
The civil fighting started to close in on the kingdom, and with too few castles, the entire royal family had been moved to the city of Vert. This left an opportunity for more royal guards as Orvich was by then about 16, growing broad and tall like a man, and powerful as any. She proved herself able and she eventually gave oaths to defend the royal family. Orvich was assigned to the King’s youngest sister, Jessume.
Jessume was every bit as beautiful as expected of a princess. Curvaceous, but with delicate and soft features. Her long hair was fine and often danced freely in the wind on the rare occasion it wasn’t ornately braided or put up in some elegant bun. Jessume often spent her time speaking with the king, trying to beg her brother into ending the war that was costing the kingdom so much. Orvich was amazed by the bravado she wielded in addressing the king the way she sometimes did.
The young ward found being Jessume’s guard was by no means an easy ordeal. The princess prided herself on her ability to slip away from her other guards. Perhaps Orvich was just clever, but she rarely lost the princess, and often worked out where and how to catch her when she did slip away. When it did occur it was usually when Jessume would go horseback riding outside the city walls. Orvich learned how to ride well enough to get around but she was never much competition for the princess though she’d do her best to try to catch her when she took difficult trails or galloped off when she thought no one looking.
“Ogrefist.” The princess said one day, flippantly over her shoulder at the obedient knight at her side. Orvich was taken aback, as the princess rarely if ever addressed the guards. Most words spoken between them were orders or occasional smug taunting when she gets away from the others. “That’s what the other’s call you, isn’t it? Orvich the Ogrefist.”
Orvich cast a glance to the side, at one of the other royal wards, but finally replied. “Some do, Princess.”
The princess stopped and looked up at her with a grin. “I think they’re jealous.” She said with the same smug smile she’d give the others after outsmarting them. “They can’t handle a woman is as good as they are.”
Orvich could not suppress a smirk at the princess. “Perhaps it’s that I’m better, M’lady.” The princess laughed heartily just before screams erupted from the throne room. A man in a cloak sprinted towards Orvich and the princess, a pair of wet blades in hand. Orvich stepped in front of the princess and yelled out for the man to halt. When he ignored his only warning she slammed her mace into his chest and knocked him clear off his feet into the floor. While he gasped for breath from the floor under broken bones, the kings guard surged from the throne room.
The man had attacked the king, the wounds resulted in a slow death of King Harnell. Orvich was honored for her quick thinking, and offered a promotion to the king’s guard. Harnell’s son, Arron, who was all of sixteen when this happened, was soon crowned king. But his aunt would not hear of her guard being taken from her, so promotion passed Orvich over at the whim of the princess. But Orvich didn’t find herself minding. Though the 18 year-old guard was knighted for her service to the crown. A day that reaffirmed her loyalty and had her father weep with pride.
After this the princess started to speak with Orvich more often, of all her guards she was the only one the princess regularly addressed. The princess seemed surprised at how well read Orvich was and equally so when finding the woman often spent what free time she had cooking. The princess continued her attempts to escape after a time. But now there was a bit of fun to be had in the chase.
Though it was short lived. With the boy-king on the throne the neighboring kingdoms allied themselves to crush the remains of Rointhia. The defence of the city against assaults became almost constant. The kings army’s were in shambles and a dark end hung over the city. So few were the army and town guard that the royal guards had been put on the walls to defend the castle. Orvich fought men off the walls, she struck with fearless strength as she crushed the life from men. Orvich’s duty was to protect the royal family, and her life was easily forfeit in these efforts.
The ward was no more than twenty when the walls fell. She carries the haunting memory of that day with her now. She’d fought for so long that day the sun was starting to cast long shadows. The enemies poured over the walls and through the broken gate. Orvich desperately struck down as many as she could as she hurried to man the last defences at the castle. But when she arrived, she found the gates open, and Jessume standing alone as the commander of the enemy army came up.
She called out a warning to the princess but there was no reply as she had a brief exchange with the commander who… saluted her before leaving his men to guard her and surging inside to take the castle. Orvich managed to fight her way to the princess, reaching out to take her hand.
“The castle is lost, M’lady.” She said her breaths coming only in heavy pants. She felt stitches in her side, her muscles burned from fighting. “We must get away. I will defend you no matter the cost.”
The princess just stared at Orvich, then frowned sadly stepping away. “I worked too hard for this to leave, Ogrefist. Vert is lost and so is Rointhia.” She then called for more of the attacking soldiers. They followed her orders, they closed in on Orvich. Orvich was stunned, she didn’t understand what had just happened. So shocked was she that she put up no fight, and was captured.
In the dark days that followed the knights and soldiers, among them Orvich's father, were put to the sword. The women and children captured, however, were released outside the city walls. Orvich stood staring at the crumbling walls and what was left of the city beyond that fire had ravaged. The princess had been named governess of the city under the rule of the neighboring kingdom. The governess had Orvich brought before her, instead of ushered outside with the rest of the survivors.
“I’ll take you as one of my guard still.” She said the words almost like an order with that soft, charming smile Orvich knew so well.
Orvich could muster no response. There was nothing more heinous and unforgivable then Jessume’s betrayal. Having seen the ugly selfishness inside what she once regarded as the beautiful princess, she just turned away shaking her head. Declining the offer got her another few days in a cell before being tossed outside the city walls. Orvich was distraught, she’d failed in her oaths to two kings now, and her father was gone. She wondered without direction and took up to living outside of a town a long ways from the marshes she called home.
The war was long over for these people, and after a few peaceful months Orvich found herself in the local book shop. The shopkeep regarded her suspiciously, as the broad woman would pick up books on the sciences and rune technology. She eventually came to the conclusion she needed to break away from the violence of war.
She was accepted into an apprenticeship under a rune master named Ikra. Ikra was brilliant but old and bent with age. His sight was failing him but was regarded with respect. Orvich threw herself into learning rune engineering and while the more laborious aspects of her work and the studies came easily, the delicate, dexterous work of making runic devices, was by far the most difficult and frustrating for her. Most of the time she’d accidentally crush the delicate stone cases or short out runestone wires using too-large power sources. Needless to say her work with rune theory always surpassed her actual experience. Her tutelage under the wise old engineer was however short lived, by the time Orvich turned 23, Ikra was blind. Unable to teach farther, Orvich was once more without purpose. Though she wasn't broken up over losing her teacher, since the war, she found getting fond of anyone near impossible. Orvich knew that progressing in her practical rune work could take her a lifetime. But she didn’t care, and stubbornly decided to try regardless.
Orvich started to travel around looking for a new teacher. What she found instead was rumor of a city in the forbidden lands with a rare form of crystal made of runestone. As much of a curiosity as it was, this wasn’t why she left. A royal wedding to the governess of Vert, and the second attempt to enlist her as a royal ward that had her finally lose her taste for the mainlands. It sparked a desire to put as much space between her and the memories of war and her father as possible. So she donned her armor, and collected her mace, tools and journel, then spent the last of the coin made working for Ikra on a one-way trip to the forbidden lands.
