Alchemy
By Hutch & Pinkie
Alchemy for Mesalia is not magic, it is not turning rocks to gold. It’s much closer to early chemistry. Our version of this type of chemistry has a healthy dose of fantasy. All of these potions and mixtures are fantasy and have no bearing irl. These potions are complicated and knowledge of them and how to make them would require specialized training and a skill to reflect it. Perms are required before exposing a character, be sure the player is aware beforehand the effect and ramifications before exposing characters to toxic plants or poison.
Until a poison has been approved for use by staff it is not to be administered ICly.
Notes for RP:
Venom is usually injected into the bloodstream through a bite or sting. These tend to affect the nervous system and muscles of the body. The same sort of venomous creatures that exist IRL can exist in the setting, but it’s always make sure the animal would live in the area the characters are in and ask a member of staff before tossing venomous animals about.
Toxins are often byproducts of an organism’s life cycle or sometimes produced actively as a defense mechanism. These affect the body in various ways. The
Toxic Plant Lore goes over those that we currently have in the setting in detail.
Poison is generally ingested, but some can be absorbed through the skin. These have an effect directly on the body or mind. This lore’s focus is on poisons and antidotes to said poisons along with some other alchemical mixtures that we hope to be fun additions to the rp.
Suggestions for contributing to this lore:
To suggest a alchemical mixture, use the code below to format it accordingly with the rest of the guide. If your alchemical mixture includes herbs or plants not in the lore (real or made up) please include something for the herb/toxic plant lore as well.

The percentages listed below are for background purposes
only and have
no bearing on RP. Any of the percentages listed are minimums. The likelihood of success rises with the amount of time put into each mixture. Perms are always required with this lore and the percentage accounts for attempts made and resulting failures due to perms. This is never to be used for powergaming. If someone attempts to use it as such,
inform staff immediately.
For all skill levels the time and study requirements from the
Skill guide still applies.
Novice
Novice alchemist will have the ability to make the following alchemical mixtures, the this skill level makes the creation slow with likelihood of success around 25%. Novice alchemical mixtures involve some knowledge of brewing.
- Activated Charcoal
Antidote; Neutralizes ingested poisons
Take one pinch every hour in a glass of water until symptoms dissipate.
Ingredients:
Oak Wood
Limestone
Preparation:
Set logs on fire in enclosed space to encourage smoldering to create charcoal. Break and charcoal up into small pieces, almost a powder. Grind limestone into fine powder, Put 25% powdered limestone and 75% water mixture in bucket. Thoroughly mix with charcoal, stir, and seal for 1 day. Strain and spread charcoal onto a drying tray for about an hour, rinse thoroughly, heat in a furnace for 3 hours, crush remaining pieces into powder.
Long Term:
Will cause stomach pain and nausea if taken to excess.
Antidote:
Stop taking to halt effect, Ginger Tea
- Ipecac Syrup
Antidote; Vomiting
one spoonful of Ipecac causes immediate vomiting and is used most commonly as a medicinal application in case of poisoning. Usually continues until stomach contents are emptied and can result in nausea and mild stomach discomfort for a day to follow.
Ingredients:
Crabs eyes
Ipecac - Needs Lore
Orange juice
Preparation:
Thoroughly clean Ipecac root, soak in water overnight then set to dry for two-days, cut and pulp into mash. Ferment mash in water over steady, low heat. Sun-dry crabs eye and crush into fine powder. Steep crabs eye in one cup of orange juice then strain. Combine with one thimble of fermented ipecac.
Long Term:
Ipecac is to be administered sparingly as continued exposure can result in stomach bleeding and death.
Antidote:
Activated Charcoal, Ginger Tea
Apprentice
Apprentice alchemist will have the ability to make the following alchemical mixtures, most mixtures can be produced in a timely manner though some creations require more time to make than others. Likelihood of success is around 45%. Apprentice alchemical mixtures require knowledge of brewing and equipment.
- Belladonna’s Kiss
Hallucinations, Delusions
This alchemical mixture causes vivid and disturbing hallucinations. The hallucinations are accompanied by delusions that remove the victims ability to rationalize the situation away. Victims of this particular alchemical mixture can often harm themselves and others in the resulting panic when trapped in what may seem like a nightmarish world. The effect of the alchemical mixture lasts anywhere from ten minutes to an hour, ending in loss of consciousness.
Ingredients:
Nightshade Berries
Belladonna Petals
Gin
Preparation:
Nightshade berries are crushed and juices separated from flesh. Both are kept. The juices are mixed with an equal measure of gin and left for three days in an area with no light. The mixture will turn a silvery-blue. Allowing light to mix with the liquid will make it somewhat volatile. Belladonna petals are then left to float in the mixture for a day, then the flesh of the nightshade berries is also applied to the mixture and stirred vigorously, then left in a dark place for another day. Finally, the leaves and berry fleshes are removed, and the mixture placed on a heat and brought to boil. Once boiling, remove from heat. Leaving it to boil for too long will neutralise the harmful qualities.
Long Term:
Deadly. Continued exposure can lead to paranoia, psychosis, eventual paralyzation and death. This is through either through the nightshade content or as a result of the delusions and psychosis brought on by the hallucinations. Nightshade can be deadly if given daily for 4-6 months. Anymore than one dosage a day can result in vomiting and has no further effect.
It someone survives long term exposure (several years worth) to nightshade, it can lead to permanent and incurable damage. Those suffering from this effect will have life-long paranoia, minor delusions, with occasional auditory and visual hallucinations.
Antidote:
Rudimentary treatment can be applied with a course of chamomile with a hint of saguaro pulp every hour for two days after exposure, continuing as necessary until symptoms have fully subsided.
- Look of Dusk
Skin discoloration, stomach pain, muscle stiffness, slurred speech
Not so much deadly on it’s own, but rather through the reaction it causes in others, Look of Dusk causes a severe reaction that makes the effected look like a shambling corpse resemblant the Dusk Creatures that plague the Forbidden Lands when night descends. Over the days following consumption, the victim’s vision blurs, their speech slurs, their skin becomes pale, almost looking like marble, stiffening their muscles, drowsiness and severe pain in their joints and gut.
Ingredients:
Black Henbane stem
Nightshade berry
Pokeweed root
Fermented irid cap
Warm vodka
Preparation:
The vodka, pokeweed root and henbane stem ate to be placed in a glass flask and left in a warm, dry place for two weeks, stirring twice daily. When that time is up, the henbane stem and pokeweed root is to be removed and the liquid poured into the underside of an irid cap which is intact. It is then to be left in a warm, dry place again, this time for five days. After that time crush a handful of nightshade berries and pour juices extracted into mixture and leave for four hours. Afterwards the mixture can be poured into another clean flask and it is ready.
Long Term:
If the victim remains uncured, or isn’t killed by other people, symptoms will slowly continue to worsen until either the victim dies of anaemia, organ failure or from nightshade poisoning.
Antidote:
The alchemical mixture can be treated by activated charcoal for up to two days after ingestion, after that time they can be treated with a mixture of arnica, birch and chamomile.
- Socara’s Drought
Paralysis
Victims to this alchemical mixture will find themselves completely immobilized by the poison though completely aware and awake. Victims can hurt themselves should they be in the middle of an activity when the paralysis hits, but generally the danger in this drought is from continued exposure. Immobilization will remain for around 2 - 4 hours, with an additional 2 - 3 hours of weakness in the extremities after it’s worn off.
Ingredients:
Hemlock
Oleander root
Cocoa beans
Dark ale
Preparation:
When mashing the malt for the ale, add fresh oleander root and proceed with mashing and lautering as per usual for brewing beer or ale. Take the resulting wort, hops, cocoa beans and hemlock and boil mixture for two hours, then strain carefully. Any remaining beans or hemlock will cause it to fail. The last step is to ferment the wart by adding yeast and keeping in a sealed vat on a low heat for two to three weeks. The result is a black ale with a bitter cocoa taste the mask that of the hemlock and oleander.
Long Term:
Deadly. Continued exposure from weeks to a month can result in respiratory paralysis causing the victim to asphyxiate. Death can only result if the subject remains fully paralyzed due to consistent dosage.
Antidote:
immediately after ingestion is is possible to vomit the mixture up or treat with ipecac syrup, after about half an hour of ingesting activated charcoal can be used to neutralize the poison assuming it is administered carefully to prevent the paralyzed victim from choking on the remedy.
Competent
Competent alchemist will have the ability to make any alchemical mixtures, all mixtures can be produced in a timely manner though some creations require more time to make than others. Likelihood of success is around 60%. The additional skill of brewing is required for competent as is brewing equipment. Competent can invent new alchemical mixtures, approved lore proposals are required
before rping any new invention.
- Coat of Needles
A deeply unsettling and irritating alchemical mixture that causes the entirety of the patient’s skin to burst into phantom-itches, prickling and rashes, as well as blurring vision and weakness. The frequency and persistence of the symptoms can lead patients to go days without sleep if they remain unaided, if the near constant itching doesn't drive them up a wall first.
Ingredients:
Larkspur leaves
Daphne bark
Stinging Nettle
Watered down vodka
Preparation:
Crush nettle leaves into pulp and drop into a jug quarter full of watered down vodka and mix until mixture is faintly green and pulp has separated. Place on a slight heat for three hours before introducing the daphne bark and leaving for a further 3 hours. After, take off heat and leave in a warm, dry place fora day. In preparation for the next step, perforate a large larkspur leaf and suspend above a container. if done correctly, the liquid inside the bowl will have soaked into the daphne bark with only a small amount remaining. Strain the liquid above the larkspur and let it soak through. The final result should be a slightly viscous, green-ish liquid.
Long Term:
Somewhat dependent on the victim, but obviously the near constant itching can go from irritating, to infuriating to truly maddening, with some willing to do just about anything to get the sensation to stop. Continued scratching can result in mass damage to the skin layer and risk of infection. Following possible recovery, some recurring effects of powerful itches can occur.
Antidote:
While the itching can feel overpowering, the source can still be obvious as it either is the only area that is always itching, or simply itches more. This area can be targeted with applications of aloe and birch. This treatment should only be applied elsewhere as necessary.
- Sulena's Touch
Skin Necrosis
Named for the goddess of death and rebirth, Sulena's Touch is an incredibly fast-acting and virulent poison. Those who come into contact with Sulena's Touch will develop a rash on the affected area within a thirty minutes which they will be driven, almost compulsively, to itch at. Continued itching will begin to make the skin flake away in increasing amounts until what would look like rot sets in, which will quickly start to stink.
Ingredients:
Concentrated Daphne
Water
Calla lily oil
Pinch of salt
Preparation:
Shards of the daphne plant’s bark are mixed into a beaker of calla lily oil and left on a low heat for three hours, after which salt is dropped into and stirred into the mixture until fully dissolved. The mixture is then brought to boil for no more or less than twenty minutes and stirred all the while. After twenty minutes, the mixture must be drained of daphne bark and left in a warm, dark place for three days. After three days, the mixture is ready. If brewed successfully, the mixture will have taken on a slightly foggy, almost silvery appearance. Incorrect heating at any stage will cause coagulation of the liquid into a foul smelling gray slime.
Long Term:
While not deadly in most cases, extensive death of the skin and muscle tissue will lead to the need to amputate the affected area. Areas which cannot be amputated must be treated, heavily, with a salve and covered up, for obvious reasons.
Antidote:
There is no antidote for Sulena’s touch, but preventing the victim from itching the affected area in any way will prevent exasperation of the symptoms. The alchemical mixture is unsustainable without regular dosage on the affected area, so will quickly, over the course of two very itchy days, will render itself inert.
Topical applications of sunray and birch can help reduce further irritation, infection and necrosis, the more affected areas should be wrapped in a bandage containing garlic pulp and paigo paste.
- Oren’s Madness
Hallucinations, Delusions of grandeur, Jaundiced vision, Slurred speech
Named for it’s effects, emulating the story of an old man who lost his sanity and burned his town and its people to ashes, it is a slow-acting and, until symptoms start to appear, undetectable alchemical mixture that induces an aloof and aggravated state which makes the individual extremely susceptible to impaired decision making and almost self-destructive whimsy.
Ingredients:
Hemlock
Water
Flour
Paprika
Shavings of apple seed
Belladonna’s kiss
Preparation:
Water being used for this alchemical mixture must be pre-treated with a small amount of limestone, letting it sit for 12 hours, which neutralizes other, unwanted effects of hemlock poisoning. The water is then brought to the boil and 4 hemlock leaves, more depending on amount of water, are placed into the water and allowed to float. After two hours, take the water off heat and leave for another two hours. Next, add a pinch of paprika and an equal measure of Belladonna’s kiss to the mixture and stir thoroughly, removing the leaves after, leave for ten minutes, then add the apple seed shavings and stir again. Finally, add to a small amount of flour in a bowl and mix until made into a fine powder. If you find large clumps, leave the mixture in a cool, dry place for four hours, then crush.
THE POWDER MUST BE INHALED, EITHER AS POWDER OR SMOKE BY BURNING, BY THE TARGET TO BE EFFECTIVE. THE POWDER EMITS A LIGHT, SPICY SMELLING MIST WHEN BURNED.
Long Term:
If left to their own devices, cases of Oren’s Madness can be fatal, to the sufferer and people around them. Of course, this is directly proportional to how much power this person holds and how willingly people follow their example and/or orders. Though with proper care, poisoning can be little more than a brief, funny turn.
Antidote:
Just as with belladonna's kiss, the neutralization of this poison can be expedited with a course of chamomile with a hint of saguaro pulp every hour for two days after exposure, continuing as necessary until symptoms have fully subsided. Otherwise, alchemical mixture will slowly lose it’s hold on the victim depending on their overall health, but usually no more than a month, returning them to their normal state, if with a slight headache lasting several days thereafter. They must be kept under supervision for about a week after the fact as reversions can happen.
- Harlequin's Kiss
Euphoria, Erratic Heart Beat
A powerful and often scarily easy to make alchemical mixture that attacks the heart and circulatory system of the victim. After only six hours of ingestion, the victim will start having irregular heart beats and weakness in their limbs, the alchemical mixture also induces an intense euphoric state.
Ingredients:
Spoonwood
Larkspur leaf stems
Cactus Flesh
Preparation:
Cactus flesh is opened up and dried in the sun for a week at a time, then spoonwood and Larkspur are crushed and boiled with water until the liquid turns red. Once red the liquid is cooled, strained, and bottled, Once bottled the dried cactus flesh must be scraped off the skin and crushed into a powder and added to the vial. The mixture then must rest for two days, before being boiled again until no more cactus powder can be seen floating in the liquid.
Long Term:
As can be expected, the alchemical mixture kills through damage to the heart muscle and irregularity of the blood flow can lead to some organ failure. That is, if the patient hasn’t done something fatally dangerous beforehand.
Antidote:
Anxiety medications such as chamomile, rosemary and volarian can help to regulate and slow the heartbeat while the body’s natural defense burns off the poison.
- Cleanse
Vomiting, Dehydration, Pain, Cramps
Perhaps one of the most unpleasant, often non-lethal poisons. Cleanse clings to and irritates the lining of the stomach and bowels, causing frequent and uncontrollable vomiting, dehydration, stomach pain and cramps.
Ingredients:
Foxglove petals
Common Spindle
Ipecac syrup
Preparation:
To start, create Ipecac syrup as usual, thoroughly clean Ipecac root, soak in water overnight then set to dry for two-days, cut and pulp into mash. Ferment mash in water over steady, low heat. Sun-dry crabs eye and crush into fine powder. Steep crabs eye in one cup of orange juice then strain. To begin making cleanse instead, add a ratio of 1/3rd fermented ipecac. Then boil the whole mixture with spindle and foxglove for 6 hours until it becomes a blacked paste at the bottom of the vial. Remove from heat, spread the remaining substance out in a thin sheet and let dry. Once dry is can be crushed into a powder. The black powder remaining has a shelf life of several years.
Long Term:
While not often lethal and easily treatable, treatment can take weeks, or months depending on the patient’s constitution. Most deaths occur either through dehydration or internal bleeding.
Antidote:
Contradictory to it’s effects, one way to cure Cleanse poisoning is to administer a treatment of ipecac syrup and laxative. This helps to remove remnants of the alchemical mixture clinging to and irritating the lining of the stomach and gut, the patient must be given plenty of water in this time.
Advanced, Expert, & Master
In order to achieve advanced or higher the alchemist must have a focus for his work or a discovery pertinent to the lore; Such as an additional proposal or even a remarkable failure. Advanced and better alchemist make mixtures quicker with better chances of success. Expert or better also requires a competent level to the skill brewing as it becomes a large part of the skill for complicated alchemical mixtures.
