Theo's Journal
#1
The following is all written in the Lucin language.

It has now been two days since I have arrived in Nightveil and I have seen a suspiciously low amount of activity in this town. The two souls I have come across are both Mesalians, leading me to believe that I must continue using the Lucin language here in ths journal should I wish to retain the ease at which it comes to me currently. Additionally, none of the common folk should be able to read it, and I have seen little to no evidence of a Lucin population in this town.

The first day, I met Rahan sitting alone at the bar. A hardy, if plain, man, he will likely be helpful in my plans regarding my room. He is a miner, and claims to have come to this town in search of adventure. His spirit is in the right place, it seems, even though his skillset is not.

After retiring to a room in the inn, I stowed my coins and journal in the chest I was given, and discovered something underneath the chest. There appears to be a trap door of sorts, and given the previous vacancy of the room I doubt anyone has been in there. It may connect to the tunnels Rahan infomed me of. I have resolved not to tell the innkeeper, lest I risk being moved from the room. It will be good for me to have such an intrigung opportunity for discovery so soon after my arrival.

I spent the next morining searching for Rahan to discuss the spelunking opportunity with. I first started in the library (foolish in retrospect as he seems uneducated) and failed to locate him there. I did some searching for books on the history of Nightveil, but againw was unlucky. I snooped about the restricted attic section, but the only things up there are writing tools and a bookshelf.

When I entered the bar to look for Rahan, I met a young lady named Lien. She seems far too skilled with a lute to be a prostitute by trade, and yet she acts like one with years of experience. She seems quite interested in me, at least initially, and will likely be useful for some fun when I have myself organized. Until then, she likely has little of value to offer me. She is, after all, just a common woman, and a young inexperienced one at that.

I will have to locate Rahan again, in any case.

The following is again written in Lucin.

It appears that this town is literally run by women, not that I'm complaining about that.

While looking for Rahan, I instead came across Zarkaylia, the town's elder. She's the author of the swordplay book I'm reading. Appears to be a somewhat capable leader and warrior, and she knows everyone I need to see: Victor, Lapis, and either of two hunters whose names currently escape me. I'll be doing some hunting work while the town's food supply is still low, though I'm sure if I was working with trade I could get food imports flowing again in a heartbeat. Nevertheless, hunting is an enjoyable sport and I'll be able to prove myself to this community as long as I'm directly providing the food.

Against my better judgment, I told Zarkaylia about the hatch, hoping she'd explore it a bit with me. I'm extremely interested in what's down there but I'm not suicidal. She took a look at it and suggested I tell the guard captain, Kane.

On my way to look for Kane, I came across a man who tuned out not to be a man. A pretty Lucin girl was patrolling town in a suit of armor; a damn waste of potential is you ask me. Her name was Adreanna, and unfortunately speaking Lucin is not going to work alone if I'm to get to know her better. She claims to hardly speak it, yet she understood everything I said with what seemed like relative ease. Hopefully this book will be a bit too advanced for her.

She did tell me of a family of Lucins living here, though: the Clarks. I believe the man Victor who's looking for employees is one of them. I'll have to see if one of them is fluent; I'd desperately like someone to speak it with. Writing it is one things but keeping my tongue sharp is another.

In any case. Adreanna and I descended the ladder. We went no farther than I myself had gone earlier before she made us turn back. Then she tried to evict me from my room. Luckily she was less than asserive on this matter and I'm staying for the time being. I'll have to speak with her again under more favorabe circumstances.

I'm not leaving the room, though. This room is too interesting to leave, even if sounds do come from the hatch at night.

I'm certain it's nothing.

The following entry is in Lucin

Today was an eventful day, to say the least.

I was finally sucessful in locating Rahan, who was sitting in the same spot at the bar where I first found him. The man really needs something exciting to happen to him, in my opinion. I was happy to provide such an opportunity and told him about the deathpit in my room, leaving out certain details, of course. He was naturally intrigued and we descended into the hole. We saw no dusks in the stairwell or hallway, but were stopped by the instability of the path. We vowed to return with wooden supports later to get across the path and stabilize it, but I in no way plan on returning to the hole without proper guard expertise, hopefully from whoever this Kane fellow is.

I shall do my best to locate him tomorrow. Perhaps Adreanna or Zarkaylia will know of his whereabouts.

In addition, I met the trademaster, "Doctor" Lapis. I'm still not sure what my goal was in speaking to her, but she seemed friendly enough. I will comment, though, that she seems far too young to be in any way experienced with trading, and I think food imports could be easily retstarted if Nightveil would export some of the precious medals that Rahan claims are found in the mines. I may or may not bring this up when I see her again. Then again, maybe she already knows and I'm underestimating her?

I find such a scenario unlikely, but I'll entertain the thought purely out of fairness.

There is a final face I met since my last journal entry, and he is the reason that I didn't write yesterday. Zarkaylia advised me to speak with the hunter, Terry. As luck would have it, he is a passive aggressive dickhole that, if I had my way, I would have kiss Isohel's hairy ass. He appears to believe that his lack of an education and simple ways make him better than me. How dare he accuse me of relying on servants without knwoing anythign about me? This is the attitude I left Adriaansbrug to escape.

I negelected to write an entry last night as I was afraid I would embarass myself with my thoughts about the asshole. Now that my thoughts are more tempered and cool, it is appropriate to comment on him.

Unfortunately, I will now be forced to prove him wrong, as if I owe him something. I will accompany him on a hunting trip, leave him dumbfounded with my experience, and gain his repsect. We will see then how directly he insults me. I will have to check out a tracking book out of the library. Shooting the animal I can do, finding the animal is another matter.

Not much has happened as of late, to be honest.

I've been reading quite a lot lately. I have finished Zarkaylia's book on Advanced Sword Tactics and plan to continue practicing with the dirk on the dummies. It is an elgant weapon, the dirk, and it is unwisely underestimated. In the time it takes someone to laugh at the relatively small blade, I can send a thrust into their chest. It seems, though, that here emphasis is put on the big. Adreanna wears a full suit of armor simply patrolling the streets. Kane carries a falchion into a cramped tunnel with no room to actually use the weapon. Perhaps it is best that they are allowed to suffer under these illusions, I will be underestimated should push ever come to shove.

I have also spent time at the library researchng tracking animals, and much of it seems common sense in retrospect. Search for transitional enviroments, look for "marker animals", stalk natural roadways where animals are apt to be. Morning and dusk seem to be the best times to hunt, as I already expected. I understand a number of other concepts as well: shinging and dulling, scat and fur samples, marks left on trees, etc. I will approach Terry as soon as possible; this should stop the attitude he has.

I ventured into the deathpit again, this time after finding Kane. For a captain of the guard, he's young strangely. In any case he's an odd fellow, seems to show little to know emotion. I noticed he makes some assumptions rather rudely and has a poor choice in weaponry for fighting in a narrow cavern. I will, however, attempt to let this all go.

At night, I've noticed, I very much like the altar to Vulcadestes. By the firelight you can see the miles upon miles of forest and mountains spanning in all directions. A sense of awe overcomes you as you realize that most of this land will never bee seen by a set of sentinent eyes, be they blue, red, or any color in between.

It's a striking thought, really.
